I saw some footed shafts that Trap had in thread about beaver tail grips. The more I look at them the more I want to try them. I used cedars a long time ago. I used to buy them in lots of 100 and sort them by weight and spine. I enjoyed it but it got to be a lot of work, when I didn't have a lot of time.

I wood like to try some cedars again now that I am going to retire in a couple of years. I would like to get tapered cedar shafts and foot them.
Has anyone ever seen a video or dvd on footing arrows? I would like to do a a 4 splice.

Also where is there a good supplier of tapered cedars? Today do you still buy them in large quantities and sort through them to get a good matched dozen or are there suppliers that can provide them in smaller quantities that are well matched in spine and weight?

Gil, Gary and Connie Renfro have produced a pretty good DVD on footing arrows.  I'm pretty sure 3RA and Kustom King have it along with most other trad suppliers.  Even I can get it for you.  Wapiti archery should be a good source for tapered cedars.  I taper Fir and Spruce and depending on the spine you need, I may have some good cedar.

Wapiti Archery is indeed a good source for tapered ceder shafts. Every dpzen I have purchased from them has been within 3 pounds spine and 3-5 grains weight. Service is good too.

Jason I was originally from north Jersey but now live in Jackson. Next year my friend Marty (Kinnelon) and I are doing a hog hunt at Ray Hammonds. If you are interested give Ray a cal we are going the furst week of May 2010. He may be booked up but if he isn't you are welcome to join us.  

I am going to have to try the Feathered Shaft, Wapiti and Kustom King. I have never seen a video anywhere on footing a cedar shaft.

I haven't shot wood arrows in a long time. Are fir and spruce now comparable to cedar?

Just a thought here but I had a dozen tapered cedars made up and discovered what should have been obvious. Unless you are fortunate enough to have STRAIGHT cedars (which are hard to obtain, I.M.O.)you will have expensive, hard to keep straight footed cedars! Secondly, instead of breaking just behind the point, they break behind the footing. It is much easier to get excellent straight douglas fir shafts from surewood or sitka spruce from hildebrand. I might add also that neither of these break as easily as cedar.

I've been wanting to do this for a while now and have plans to build a jig and give it a try. Just need to find some cheap shafts to test with. Maybe just use dowels from the depot.
