Hopefully the elk draw comes in too.  Drew into a September 1-22, 3rd pick but still good location at the NM/CO border just east of the Durango area (unit 2B).  Anyone familiar with this area/unit?  Never hunted there so any info is appreciated.
Thanks,

Give me a bow a topo and two weeks, and I guarantee I kill two weeks!

If I were to go for mule deer here in NM unit 2B would be at the top of the list.  I found a mulie shed up there at first I thought it was an elk shed.  Some big boys roam those woods.

I got 15 for elk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whip

I know that is a great area in January, but don't know a thing about it for the September hunt.

I drew a unit 36 MD tag for the January hunt.  Should be a good time of the year for a trip to one of my favorite states!

Congratulations on pulling that tag.

Are you bringing one of those Vermilion River bows with you?

Good for you Eddie, Whip!! I'll be hunting next to you   :)

Hunted elk last year in 34. I didn't see many bucks the weather was fairly warm......

I drew unit 34 deer this year, I didn't draw my elk so I'll be hunting the January part of the season. If I had drawn the elk I would have hunted both in September. Should be a blast though!! Those big boys come out to chase the ladys   :)

Cool Kip!  You'll be on the other side of the reservation - if you bump them make sure they head north  ;)
January in NM is a fun time of year for a get-a-way.  I'm going with a couple of buddies from here and we will be camping.  Could be a bit cold, but will be a good time regardless.

2B is the current hot spot for mulie's. A friend of mine shot a huge buck with a rifle up there last year.

I drew 3rd choice deer in 15 and 3rd choice elk in 52. It's not how I planned it but I can't complain about drawing 2 tags.

Maybe we can bump some of those monsters off the reservation   :)

I'm looking forward to it. This will be my first Trad Mullie hunt. Last season there was quite a bit of snow. I have a buddy that got a real nice buck last year .....

Good luck Whip   :)

Eddie, 2B is a great unit for big bucks. I've tried to draw a couple of times no luck ....

Hope you have a great hunt !!

Thanks, guys.  The January hunts were my first 2 choices but I'll take what I can get.  Lots of north slope glassing may pay off this year!
And yeah, Dusty, I'm taking the Vermilion Rivers.  But I'm also taking the 2009 St. Jude Dryridge longbow that I picked up at the auction this year.  Gotta try to add to Don's great mojo!

Good luck guys. All four of our hunting group drew for elk (6C) in NM this year. Apparently application numbers were down so we got lucky!

The biggest deer I have ever seen in my life that was on public land was in New Mexico, back in 1991.  I was a Military Police Officer in the ARMY at White Sands Missle Range, and I used to look forward to finding him when I went on range patrol. Simply a beautifull creature.

Eddie,
I grew up hunting unit 2B. I live just over the border now in CO. A lot of the deer in unit 2 are migratory in that they'll spend their winters down in unit 2 but migrate to a higher elevation in southern Colorado during the summer. I have killed deer there during the September season hunting waterholes. Spot and stalk is tough because of the thick oakbrush. Feel free to contact me if you need some more info. Rick

Thanks, Rick.  That's kind of what I was thinking.  Hopefully I'll be able to find a resident population in the area.  Figure I'll do some scouting next month & see.
