Need some good advice on sharpening systems for Grizzly 190 El Grande and Knives.  I have a Lansky that I've had for 15 years or so and really never used until recently.  Bought some Grizzly 190's a month ago and found some instructions on sharpening them at this site.  So I shaped the initial edge with a disc grinder and a hand file, then used my lansky to finish.  I have the ceramic (I think) stones that came with the kit.  I saw some other posts, and watched some youtube videos on other sharpening systems (Gatco, and KVM) and wondered if I should change from the lansky.  My lansky stones sharpened the grizzly, but as I did more and more blades, the hones didn't work as good and it seemed I was having to push harder and harder, even when I cleaned the shavings out of the hone.  Should I drop the lansky and upgrade to one of these other systems?  Would I have better luck using the Diamond Hones on the lansky with the Grizzly?

I primarily want to sharpen the Grizzly broadheads as well as some knives.

Will the diamond blades be better than the ceramic?

I got a KME and have battled with it.  However, I haven't given it the effort it deserves and after reading multiple post I think once you figure it out the sky is the limit.  The KME is so simplistic I can't believe I struggle with it so much which is why I gave up so soon.  Going to invest some time this summer and tinker with it until I get it right.  There are a ton of people on the site that have great helpful hints reference the KME.  Good Luck

The Diamond vs Ceramic thing is almost a matter of preference.

They both will do what you want them to.


If you've not developed a feel or preference for diamond hones I'd save the $20 and buy the standard kit.

I hope to do a review of KME's new ceramic stones here shortly.  

Bottom line, KME (Ron) doesn't put junk out there.  I highly doubt you'd kick yourself for not getting the diamond stones.

I'm partial the the KME myself...  

KME for sharpening ANY head....not just grizzes.

I use a 3 sided Jewelstik in the field for touch ups.

Vernon, don't battle with the KME. Use moderate, consistent pressure. Don't bear down too hard. I stared out using excessive pressure and just when it seemed to be getting sharp, things would get screwed up. I think too much downward pressure causes the edge to roll and lose sharpness. A softer touch may give you better results.
