I went to a pro shop and I shot some 2016's, 5575's, and CE Heritage 250's with 125 gr. tips. The 250's at 31" flew awesome. Each and every shot excellent from 20 yards. I tried with 145 gr. points and that flew well too.

My draw length is 28", I wanted to keep my arrows about 30". I would also like to use my existing 140 gr. broadheads if possible. Do you think cutting one inch would be okay? Or should I just go with 31"?

As I have seen in my uber technical days with a compound and since as a more grounded trad guy, with carbons a 1/4" length change is often about a 25grn head weight change.

I would say let the bow and your shooting tell you what length vice opinion or assumption...

I was shooting 250's at 29" with 200grs and as my dl lengthened I moved to a 30-30.5" 350 with 175 up front.  I am not sure the exact length as I just cut short sections off till they flew well and then tested with broadheads and such...

Did those have 50,100 grain brass inserts Frank or aluminum.Carbon can get pretty stiff with cutting back the length.I am no carbon guru.I do shoot Cx 250s with about 200-250 up front out of a variety of bows from 48. to 56 #s at 30 inches cut to 30.5.I draw about 30 inches.

anyway you may be able to shorten and use a brass insert to bump your point weight up a bit to account for the shorter arrow.I like the brass inserts and recommend them.The 100 grainers may get you to where you want to be combined with your 145 gr heads and the shorter 30 inch arrow.I know it would be a mean combination if it works for you.

Ofcourse you could just leave at 31 and be happy.Thats a good arrow!

Frank if you cut those arrows you will be sorry  ,I shoot 250,s at 30" WITH 100 GR BRASS INSERTS and 175 to 250 gr  point weight  at 55lbs,, so leave them at least 30" and probably with 100 gr inserts and your 145gr broadheads they should fly ok ,, cutting an inch or two off you will have too stiff an arrow to fly well , Steelhead is right on just leave them at 31" and be Happy,, I also recommend  100gr brass inserts they give you great foc and bump up total arrow weight !

With carbons I let the my tuning dicate their final length,they can handle some weight changes.But cutting them shorter really affects their spine.If the are flying good where they are I would leave them at that length.

You guys are right. Normally, for an arrow 30" with a 145 gr. point out of a 54# bow, would a CE 150, 2117, or 35/55 be preferable, assuming a standard insert ~20 grains?

Lets not forget where the riser is cut to affects the spine more than the weight drawn.

I shoot cx 250's 31" bop with 100 gr inserts and a 145 point out of a 54# recurve. Fly well for me.

i shoot cx 350 out of my 53 lb bow tried 150 250 by far the 350 flew the best i know this doesnt sound right but thats how it worked out the charts are a good starting point but results dont lie  shoot what flys out of your bow the best and dont ask why just go with it.

I shoot Herritage 250`s cut to 29 3/4" with 200gr. points out of my Black Widow MA III 52#@28.They fly real nice.A little depends on how the shelf is cut.To center,past center,etc.And you can play around with differant thickness of shelf material.There`s many ways to get the broadhead weight you want,through adapters and heads.

Give the CX 150's a try.  The 250's are a little to heavy of a spine.  You may get them to fly right leaving the long and alot of wt up front.

When cutting an arrow down. Can you ballpark spine? Something like, for every inch cut off, to maintain spine, you must add 100 grains to the point?

I shoot CX 150s cut 29" bop with 200 gr. up front. I would personally try some 150s for that weight.

I shoot CE 250's cut at 27.5" with 100gr insert, 175gr head out of a Jim Jones Firefly which is 55# at my draw of 26". The bow is cut 3/16 past centre so about 1/8 past centre with the side plate. These arrows bare shaft beautiful out to 30m.

FrankM, that would be in the ball park as zbearclaw posted. But it all depends on amount of centershot.

Also as mentioned when tuning carbons let the arrow flight dictate length and point weight.

Actually, they fly perfect with the 125 grain points and total weight of 509.  The dynamic spine is at 72.8. My bow dynamic spine is 70.3. I might try 145 grain points, it'll bring the dynamic spine to 67.2 and arrow weight to 529, but if it works, I can use my existing 140 gr. broadheads. I do not plan to cut them unless required. My DL is 28" now, I tested it without a bow and figured, if it changes, based on my body structure, it'll max out at 29", if it ever gets there. So, 31" arrows are a safe bet for now.
