Whip had a last season turkey tag to fill so with high hopes I took him to a secret spot located at the edge of an apple orchard overlooking a narrow field with the roosting woods a long stone throw away. A day earlier we brushed in a blind at the end of a line of spruce and we were proud of the finished product. An early gobble far off gave us hope for the gorgeous morning that was unfolding.  Soon a hen appeared in the field but quickly took flight back to a roost tree with a fox in pursuit dashing hopes of any quick appearances by the rest of the group. Truth be told the scouting for this "spot" was conducted by my 80 yr. old mother-in-law over the last 6 weeks from her patio window. Sooner than we thought the hen flew down and did a beeline to our deek purring as she came in following a path we were projecting for the tom. A few more hens came into the field and entertained us for awhile then they got bored of my calling and laid down in the field 40 yds. from the blind. My calling must be inspirational. Joe looked down the field in the opposite direction and saw a tom. He's not suppose to come from that direction didn't he read the script! I grabbed the binocs and focused in on a BLACK cat.............Joe you sure you saw a tom?  Ya I did the cat scared him off...........OK we'll go with that for now.  Nothing else materialized so at 8 we headed to the local diner for my final responsibility of providing nourishment for the vanquished.  We met other turkey hunters at "The Eat More" and finished up a nice morning with a good friend.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

Nice. Now Joe has more material on those "dumb birds".

It WAS a turkey.  I KNOW it was a turkey!! The cat scared him away - that's my story and I'm sticking to it   :readit:

Thanks for the guided hunt Bruce.  Great set up, and the birds obviously were there.

If you ever get a chance to go turkey hunting with Bruce take him up on it.  If you don't kill a bird he even insists on buying breakfast!  Now that's my definintion of a Win-Win proposition!
