This year when I attended PBS I bought a wooden hen turkey call from JoeBuck.  I practiced with it a lot when I got home and drove my wife crazy.  Our turkey season has been open since May 1st but it has been tough this year.  We had a very warm April and the grass is high.  The turkeys haven't been in their usual spots.  It was a really nice morning today and I set up before dawn in a spot I have had good luck in the past.  I could hear some turkeys gobbling on the roost but they were really far away.  I pulled out my Wooden Hen and went to work.  I didn't know if these northern birds would like that southern accent   ;)   but they loved it.  I called in 4 birds form at least 1/2 mile.  This one was the biggest and made the mistake of coming the closest!  A Simmonds Treeshark at 5 yards works great.  Broke his spine and he was down and out. Great hunt.

Thanks everybody.  Yup, that is a string tracker.  Set up with Guru's design.  It has worked well for me although this bird was down in sight. I know what you mean about sleep deprived Chris.  These 4 am mornings catch up with ya.

Joey, Ive talked to you alot and there is no mistakin you for a yankee. Do you tune the calls differant for the northern guys? By the way that call looks alot nicer than mine. Not complaining but my stickers and call are still carried around in the ziplock bag they came in. I figured out a way to drive my wife crazier than the scratchbox. I'll tell you how bad it is and some of you might can relate. I been trying to get , running a mouth call down pat. My wife said why don't you just get your fiddle out and play. LOL love ya Joey.

Congrats on the bird Steve, thats a great feat and a nice call too. Don

Batman, it does not take you long to read a book or just look at the pictures like me does it?..I do tune my calls different between the blue and the grey. But i tune the striker keys not the call. On northern calls ,i use a hardwood strikers thus creating a faster note. On southern birds, i use a lot of soft woods so it scratches slower. Then sometimes i have to get more specific per states...like for example..CA..i would use only a reclaimable recycled green friendly striker wood because they are more eco sensitive.....now if i have to go city specific like for example San Francisco..well i would just use............oh gosh i better quit before i get in trouble.
