I just finished a meal almost entirely harvested by my own hands. Morel mushrooms sauteed in garlic butter and venison medallions from a young deer taken in December.

Both the shrooms and deer were taken no further than 100yds apart. That patch of public land has fed my family and I well. In a few months we'll be picking black raspberry's along the trail I walk in on.

Right now I'm in a reflective mood, feeling humbled and thankful for all we are provided with from this patch of forest people drive by everyday. Do these motorists realize there is an "all you can eat" buffet inside that tree line?
Just one more step please!

I know what you mean, today my wife and I had elk burgers from her elk last year, potatoes out of the garden, and tongiht I am having a skillet of scramble up with eggs, ham, and young polk greens from my barnyard. Nature gives us a bounty if we look for it and take time to utilize it.

Most folks don't know what they're missing. A dinner like that makes for a memorable meal.

I don't think there is anything more satisfying then feeding the family with game I took and garden I grew.

I was escorting my sons Kindergarten class as we went through a State Park here in the Pacific NorthWest and I saw and harvested some salmon berries.  The teacher of the class told me to be careful "those are poisoness" and I had to explain that during parts of my life I practically lived on these and other wild berries around the area.  But she told her students the same thing, not that they "might" be poisoness, but that they were.

I've been keeping the freezers full of chickens, turkeys domestic and wild, pigs, peking ducks, cows and of course deer that i have killed and butchered. Oh, and of course fresh eggs. My girlfriend ahs been busy storing things from our garden this year and just getting ready to plant again

We're having venison steaks tonight also, from last Decembers deer.Unfortunatly our potatoes from last years garden have long been eaten. We will have green beans with it though that are from last years garden. We do raise our own beef but, the venison will have to hold us over until this years steer finishs fatting. Wish I had shot a doe when I had the chance as that tag went unfilled.  Ben
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

Great job!! nothing better than a meal you worked hard and done all the dirty work for.. Congrats!!
I'd rather hold a recurve than shoot a compound

My most favorite thing to do at the dinner table is have my children identify where the different parts of the meal have come from.  So gratifying to hear them say that we grew that, or dad shot that, or we raised and butchered that.  REALLY hits home when they have friends over and those friends tell their parents.

On another note, with the prices of food and the way the economy is  "Thank god I'm a country boy"  John Denver

How can some people actually believe it is WRONG to be a hunter?

Humility and thankfullness go hand in hand with pride and satisfaction.

Instinct is NOT dead.

At my house we eat "wild" daily almost. My Uncles are hardcore gardeners and have been for a half century. Needless to say we eat a lot of homegrown vegetables.  We eat Fish about every 7-10 days.Catfish , Bream and Bass right now in a few weeks it will be Whiting and shrimp from the coast.A few blacktip sharks thrown in and maybe a few flounder and sheepshead.

Then we got Rabbit, qual, wood duck , Turkey , Deer and wild pig in the freezer and its full. God continues to bless us here in the swamp.RC

Hunting/gathering/gardening - if it wasn't for all these bills I have to pay there's be little reason to WORK! So few people that I know do these things. And trying to explain the satisfaction to them is futile. WE are one lucky bunch of folks.
