Was wondering if those that are shooting 53# bows could list their set-ups?  I'll be receiving a John McCullough 60" Griffin 53# @ 28" this week and wanted to see what everyone is using.  I'll be trying my current arrows, but all my bows are in the 59-60" range.

Any insight would be appreciated.

How is the shelf cut? To center, 1/16",..? What tip weight do you want to shoot?  If you are using arrows that are spined currently for your bows that are 59#-60# (that was what you meant wasn't it?) then you can add more tip weight.

I'm using GT's 35/55 cut 28.5 BOB with 100 grain brass insets and FT's at 125-200 grains. Have worked well on my bows running 53lb-55lbbows @ 28" draw. My 51 lb. Whip likes this set-up in the 125-175 grain. range.

Also, what's your draw length and what arrow material are you looking for: wood, aluminum, or carbon? What string material is on the bow?

You shouldn't have any trouble getting your current arrows to function. A tweak here and there with brace and point weight should get you right on target.  

My draw length is 28".  I've been shooting carbon in my other bows which are a LaClair Grayling Spiirt 62@29 and a Chastain Wapiti 60@28. I've been playing with  GT Trads 55/75, CX Terminator Selects 45/60 and CX Terminator Hunter Selects 60/75.  Additionally, I also shoot wood.  As for wood not problem there since I have that aspect covered.

My BH are 160's.  My current set-up for the GT's:

29.75" 160 gr point, 50gr insert, 35gr Al adapter, 5" Sheilds

The CX 45/60: Still playing with length, but using same set-up as the GT's but with std insert and 100gr steel adapter.

The CX 60/75 still in the process of finding the correct tune.

Using Stu's calc.  I think I should be able to use the CX 45/60's just have to find the correct length.

Bottomline, just wanted to see what others are using and their formulas.  As Bowferd said I also believe i can get these arrow to work.

If you use skinny carbons, the MFX or Axis 400's, 30" BOP with 100 gain inserts and 125's, maybe 150's works for me. They're pretty tolerant in a variety of bows/weights.

Ill bet a 60/65 wood arrow with 145 tip cut to 29 in. would fly real good out of that bow . If you like aluminum , 2016 cut to 29 in. with 145 tip or 2018 cut to 30in. with 145-160 tip should shoot good .

I have a 53# longbow, which shoots 525 grain POC shafts cut 29 1/2 (finishes at 28.5 BOP) 5 1/2 inch shield cut feathers, 125 grain field point up front and the shafts spine 50-55 LBs.    

Nock point 5/8" above the shelf. Comes right in at 10 gpp.    

They do the job.

My longbow likes 65-70 spined tapered sitka spruce cut to 29 1/2" with 160 gr points.I have a total arrow weight of @590 grains

All my bows are right there and my setup is a Easton Trad Only 500 shafts from 3 rivers with 200 to 225 grains up front.

As Snag said and I'm sure you know though proper arrow spine for that bow will do a lot on how your riser is cut.

The riser will be the main issue.  I won't know for sure until I get the bow but John basically said he cuts the riser so it would be around +1/8"

Here is a little update:

Got my new Griffin 53@28.  Shot two different carbon arrows that I've been using in my 60 pound recurves.  Seems that these set-ups shoot better in the Griffin....but more shooting needs to be done.

GT 55/75 Trads 29.5" BOP, 160 points, 50gr brass insert, 27gr Al adapter, 5" Shields.. total weight 532grs

CX Terminator Selects 30.25 BOP, 160 points, 75gr steel adapter, std insert, 5" shields..total weight 546

My 53@28 Whip likes GT 35/55 cut 29.5" with 125-145 up front. Speedy arrow with enough weight for hunting.

my 54#@28" recurve shoots GT 55/75's at 31 1/8" BOP. with 100gr insert and 250gr point.

I have a couple bows in that range but also have a 29 1/2" draw.
I can get 2016-2020 to work with little hassle

John cuts to center and from what I can measure on my Griffin with the strike plate it is 1/8"+.  I used this in Stu's DSC and it worked out well.  

I'm using CX Terminator Select 45/60 shafts.  
29-15/16" BOP
100 gr Brass insert
125 gr Steel adaptor
160 BH
3-5" Shields

total arrow weight is 682 +/- 2grains
FoC is 27%

Chrono'd my 53@28 (pulling 28.5") and I'm getting 165 fps...not bad for a 12.4 GPP

with a 635 gr arrow it is doing 175 fps/ 11.5 GPP

with 585 grainer...185 fps/ 10.6 GPP
