I was leaving a friends house last night and stepped of the curb wrong. I think I have a light sprain. I can walk, but very slow and with a severe limp. I have a multi species hunt coming up that I've been waiting a long time for...10 days out!

Any advise on a quick healing??   :(

Hot and cold compresses and stay off it a couple of days.  The slowly work it back into flexibility with short walks.  Stretch it first.  Keep it wrapped while walking to keep from rolling it again.  Go to the health food store and pick up some Arnica.  It helps with swelling and bruising and is pretty amazing as to how well it works.  Only take what is recommended in the directions.

Go to a decent sporting goods store and get yourself a lace-up ankle support. They are made to be worn over your sock, before you put your shoe on. I wore one after an ankle sprain playing baseball, and was still able to play.
When you don't have the brace on, do a lot of icing. A zip lock bag full of ice (crushed ice so it will conform to your ankle is best) draped over your ankle with an ace bandage to hold it in place will help. 20 minutes of icing about 4 to 5 times a day will do. Also, take ibuprofen for the inflammation.
Good luck.

Andrew, do yourself a favor and get it checked out, if you havent already. I did pretty much the same thing a while back and thought it was just a srain, turns out I had a tear in my achiiles tendon, I was lucky i caught it before it tore in half. I hope you just have a light sprain, but its better to be safe than sorry. if it is a small tear You still might be able to hunt from a blind with a walking boot type brace.

Drink lots of beer. That helps whatever is hurting me. Just sayin'

Works for me...

How big did your ankle get?
I thought mine was sprained once. It was really a fractured lateral malleolus. (Distal end of the fibula, "outside anklebone.")

I did this by stepping from one rock to another at Great Falls Park. No biggie, no jump, my foot just rolled out from under me.

I would get it looked at instead of relying on a bunch of laymen who haven't even glanced at your fool foot.   :readit:

I had a couple of sprains that the drs told me were worse than if I had broken it. They were preachin to the choir as I had broken one ankle already once before and it didn't hurt nearly this bad.

The bottom line is.. check it out, don't just assume. Remember you want to use those ankles for a very long.

I am sorry it happened and the timing kinda blows too but I am glad you are taking it well.

God bless,Mudd

I think it'll be OK. I went and took a shower. Just very slight swelling and hardly any discoloration. I managed to go to the grocery store after taking an Aleave. The boss said I could have tomorrow off also. If things aren't better then, I'll go to the ER.

Thanks for caring all.

P.S. Got beer. =0)

What Killdeer said!!!!!!!The beer thing ain't bad!

when i was i was in school that happened to me. i was a power lifeter and squat was my strongest event.  coach put my leg in hot as i could stand it water for about 5 mins. then took it out and right into ice water.  did this a few times a day and it got much better. sense then i have used to same process with ?tendinitus? with same results.  it worked for me

The last thing you want to do is injure it worse on the hunt...Um - if you can't go, I'd be happy to fill in for you.     :bigsmyl:

While playing basketball in high school I rolled my ankle terrible.  The trainer had me spend 10 minutes with it in ice water then ten minutes in warm water.  The idea is that cold water pushes the bad blood out of the sprain, limiting the swelling and the warm water causes fresh blood to flow to the ankle.  Then stretch it for five minutes.  Let it sit for five minutes then repeat it.  Its going to hurt like hell the first few times, but your ankle will heal up pretty quickly.

I did exactly the same thing a few months ago. I kept some ice on my ankle and foot when I could for a couple of days and then was careful not to overstress my ankle and further injure it. I was doing pretty well in a few days, but it took several weeks to get over it completely. I have thick ankles that are not injured easily and have seen others suffer for much longer after similar incidents. Good luck. Hope you heal quickly. There is not much you can do to speed up your recovery. Just don't do anything stupid to make things worse.

Sounds like you've got a good plan so far.  Let me second what Smokin Joe said about the lace up ankle support-its WORTH it.  I rolled my ankle pretty bad years back and still wear the support if I'm going to be doing any sporting type stuff.  Depending on what kind of boots you'll be wearing, I'd strongly suggest wearing the brace on your hunt.  Your ankle may feel pretty darned good by then, but I can tell you that rolling it again on that soon after the initial injury hurts a lot and would likely be a lousy end to your hunt.  Hope all goes well

Cure for sprain is RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation. Still takes time. Being gimped you will be able to sit longer in a blind and will be able to still hunt like us old geezers - walk a little look a lot.
