OK pretty new at building arrows. Going more for function than real pretty arrows. Thinking about sealing shafts with polyshade minwax satin polyurethane. (its got stain and poly together).
So question is would this be a good durable finish or should I use something else?. Building hunting arrows - ash 11/32.

Steve Clandinin

I don't know about the Min-Wax with the stain ,but the regular Min-Wax wipe on poly works great, satin or gloss.

I would try it first on some wood and then try my glue on it to make sure it all works before I put it all over my shafts. Gary

I have used it and had no problems.I dont have much space to work,so its easier to use a wipe on finish than to set up dip tubes.
I cant say its the best, because I'm no expert, but I liked the way mine turned out and they have lots of color choices.
I think the only way to be sure is to try it for yourself.

minwax polyshade works just fine ...

I've used it a bunch, and it worked fine. One consideration is that polyurethane tends to stick when shot into 3D targets, making the arrows difficult to pull out. I changed to gasket lacquer when I shot 3D because of it. Otherwise it's fine. When fletching your arrows, superglue (the thicker kind, not the watery stuff) does a great job with it. Also good for putting nocks on.

I like my arrows simple, too, and for cresting I use Sharpie pens with polyurethane. It dresses them up a bit without being difficult to do. I usually use some red, to attract blood!

Having trouble with photobucket, but maybe this will work:

When I shot wood I used it and got good results.I never tried super glue but used Duco and it did the job for me.

for the most part, minwax american chestnut polyshade (and no clear coats as that's built into the shader coats).

or minwax american walnut wood stain.  once the shafts are dull stained, i use minwax wipe on gloss polyu over any stains, about four wipings, 4/0 steel wool buffed between coats, final coat left glossy.  last step is the sharpie pen cresting to jazz up the looks of the arrows.

I use disposable craft-store foam brushes to apply the finish. No cleanup. Rob, are those goose feathers in the bottom picture? That's what the side feathers are on that one of mine that's stained and finished for turkey hunting, no bright colors.

What fletching glue works with these
polyurethanes?

If you use the min-wax fast drying poly in an oil base, you will not pick up as much target crud, as you will with the water based poly.
I always glue with Duco.

Tim, Duco works fine, but I prefer thicker formulations of superglue. Loctite is the brand I usually use. It's very compatible with the urethanes, having similar chemistry, and I can fletch arrows as quickly as I can put the feathers on using my 6-banger JoJan. By the time I get the sixth one glued on, I can go right back to the first with no waiting. I still use Duco for that important drop on the end of each feather when I'm done.

don, those are canada goose feathers.

i use bohning fletch tape exclusively for all arrow fletching, either carbon or wood, with a dot of duco or fletchtite on the fletching ends.

i always use minwax stains and polyu finishes for woodies.
