Ya I am of the a similar opinion - I would not mount it unless I recovered it.

I said it before Mount the arrow and you have solved the problem.It looks good and you can tell the story.It's a cheap mount as well.

Well if I wanted an possum on the half shell mounted it probably would cost more than $145.If I had one and could buy one already done cheaper I would chunk mine back in the hole.  :D  

If you want one I would just get it.Might be kind of cool looking and it ain't like we are talking record book game animals here guys.  

Here's another situation.  I shot a black squirrel this fall with my bow.  After the taxidermist skinned it, he sent it off to the tanner.  The tanner called back and said the hide was slipping.  It wasn't worth the money to mount an animal that would soon be goin bald.  Now, I could order a new skin online and have the mount done (plus, I still have pictures of the one I got).  Not to hijack this thread, but what would you guys do.  I don't think I want to mount one I didn't shoot, but I was pretty bummed mine's hide slipped.

I wish I had known, I would have sent you one.  I bought one on the beach in Mexico for 5.00.  

My daugther took it to school for show and tell with the understanding that it never come back  home.

The reason it IS different than a reproduction fish is that a reproduction fish is actually caught, measured, weighed, photographed and then returned to the water at the anglers choice to reproduce and provide good genetics to the fishing hole.  In this instance the animal wasn't actaully taken (or caught in the case of a fish).  It would be like having a reproduction mount of a buck that you wounded and didn't recover just because you had a pic of him on your trail camera.  The dillo wasn't recovered so whos to say it won't heal and live, after all it did crawl off after lying there all day?  So technically it wasn't taken.

not a good idea to stick your hand down in a goffer hole. I live in south ga and the rattlers share the house with goffers!!! be careful, you may get more than a dead dillo by sticking your hand in there. Every year people die or end up with very nasty scars and memories from pit vipers, sorry you didn't retrieve your booner dillo but there are more than enough of them rascals to go around. better luck next time and by the way good shot, dillos are not all that big of a target.

Just do something with the arrow like said above,that will save you money in the long run because if you keep hunting you will have many more chances. If you didn't put your hands on it then you didn't get it. Good luck next time and good hunting.

sorry to possibly hijack, i have a friend that shot a goat with his bow and the goat fell off a cliff, they were within 200 feet of it dead, but with no way to reach it without a helicopter, or some realy rock climbing gear, what would you think of a replica in that situation,  he never mentioned such a thing but this made me think of that situation.

I once saw a mount of a 'dillo in a shop in Texas that basically duplicated that photo that most of you have seen where people find a road-kill 'dillo on his back, put a Lone Star longneck on his belly and snap his photo.  Saw lots of those photos, but this was the first time I ever saw an actual mount of one like that.  :confused:  

Sorry about getting off the topic......it was just what popped into my mind when I saw we were talking about 'dillos!
