Got tired of reading about all the fun ways guys are beating the winter blahs so I decided to stretch my legs and the string on my new TallTines at a pheasant preserve.

Yes, the TTs are lookers, but more so, they are high performance rugged hunting bows.  They have it all IMO.  That is why I wanted to give them a workout on the fast moving birds.  Typically I would have one of my Super Shrews on an outing like this, but the TT handled it all in fine style.

My avatar shows my best friend of 12 years.  He and I used to hunt wild pheasants EVERY night of the season back when I was in my 20s.  Yesterday I was privileged to hunt behind a German Shorthair and an English Pointer.  GOOD dogs!

I've been able to hunt these birds with my bows quite a few times and it is always a blast.

This is one of the few things you can do with your bow that you don't get upset if you miss!

Everything about it is very challenging and even the near misses are exciting.  Don't go if you have to have a full game bag to have a successful day.

If I had a dog that was steady to wing and shot, I would use a 160g Snuffer, but the odds of that are very, very slim.  I don't want there to be any chance of getting a dog hurt so I go a different way.

I've tried a lot of combinations.  I've never used any of the big Snaro type points, they seem like they would need a lot more horsepower than I have to work properly.

I've had Judos and Ace Hex blunts bounce off birds.

What I find works best is a field point with a Zwickey Scorpio behind it.  I want to keep the arrow in the bird if at all possible.  The bird will not get away from the dog if that arrow stays in.

What heads did you shoot?
Last time we shot a preserve they wouldn't let us shoot broadheads on our Flu Flu's as they didn't want to take a chance of lost arrows cuttin a dogs feet later.  I always preferred old 3 blade Muzzy heads, but their place and rules.
We struggled w/ blunts and judo points bouncing off the birds.  I finally caught one in the head after glancing off her back, but w/ 4 guys we hit around 12 birds that day and only felled that one.  The last place we went we felled almost every bird struck w/ broadheads....

Spot on...tried them also...

Found a field point backed w/ a small game collar to be a great combo of makin them stick.

Roger on that.  The Scorpio slides up the shaft; I've not had any shear off the feathers    

Mike Mitten is hunting birds today on video.  He is going with blunted field points and his LARGE diameter aluminum shafts--I'm waiting for feedback.

Congrats on some nice shooting and a pretty bird for the pot!  Up here in ND, I have phesants and chukar that travel my farm and visit my bird feeders regulary.  Sometimes I wonder if they know just how close they are to becoming lunch   .

Hey I know that place! My buddy and I hunt there quite often to keep the dogs in shape. Have'nt tried it with a bow yet but plan to.  Good Shooting!

Doesn't get any more fun than pheasant on the wing with a bow.

When I did it last year I used field points with tiger claws behind them....worked great...
