How many does it take ? Is that a point a year ?

The "bonus points" actually mean very little.  They are just one more chance to draw in a lottery where the odds are quite slim. If you are a nonresident you can actually purchase as many points as you want.  The best analogy would be like buying extra lottery tickets in a super lotto-  you get an extra shot, but the odds are still very low.  That being said, I still put in every year because the moose hunting is so great!  If you can get your name on the permit of a resident (as the subpermittee) either by friendship or an arrangement through an outfitter, your odds go way up. There's nothing quite like a Maine moose hunt!

Hey there's an idea- my brother and dad live in Maine.  What would they have to do?  Buy a tag and add my name?  I would love to shoot a moose.

JJ1956

Good luck I have a friend who has applied for over 20 years and still has'nt been drawn

dpg

maxwell-
Maine residents have a much better chance of being drawn than nonresidents. Your brother and dad  would have to apply in the lottery, add your name as a "subpermittee", then if drawn, either the permit holder or the subpermittee can shoot the moose.  They must, however, hunt together at all times.  See the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website for details.

It's still a 1 in 70 chance for Residents, and the way it works here that basically means once in 70 years you will get a permit! They need to change the system, despite what they say it is not random.

Haaa...I hope I draw a tag some day. sounds like they do need to change the system.
