I'm looking for good books/dvd's that can explain/teach me the basics. Not specifically equipment related but more correct form and practice related.

Thanks All,
chad

Masters of the Barebow 3 would be my top recommendation for a teaching video.  It will save you from developing a truckload of bad habits that need to be "unlearned."

There are some other helpful materials out there, but if you start with this as a foundation, you can pick and choose from other opinions to see what works best for you.

If you decide you want a book, I'd recommend "Instinctive Archery Insights" by J. Kidwell...

Awesome Book for both the old and new. There are two editions to it. The revised edition is sold by 3Rivers

Both these will go really well together. Get them both before you even shoot an arrow.......or you might end up shooting like me. Nobody wants that  :knothead:

Reading this book helped me to visualize the challenges need to overcome as a beginner.  The video I think helpful is "The Accuracy Factory" of Rick Welsh.  I also record my own shooting video just to review.  (It's embarrasing to see how many mistakes each time I watched my own.  But that helped me to spot the problems quicker.)

T.J Conrads book, The Traditional Bowhunters Handbook was one of the most helpful books I have read and wish I had read it sooner.  It answered many of the questions I had.  I think you'll probably find in helpful.  Good luck,

I think G.FRED ASBELL's books are the best ones I have read very informative with great stories.

Master of the barebow series was great. I found Rick Welches 2nd video very helpful. Really improved my shooting. He takes you thru each step.

I dont know what the best would be but I owe alot to G.Fred Asbell. I read his Instinctive Shooting 2 and watched his videos. Helped me immensly when I was starting out. I still watch and read them. You will find Fred is well versed on multiple traditional subjects. When he speaks, it has been good for me to listen. Fred and his wife are sponsers here so you will find their website up in the sponsor list.

I'll second T.J.'s book The Traditional Bowhunters Handbook.  Great explanation of the basics and options.  Available through the Traditional Bowhunter website.

Chad, all the recommended books are great and i have read most of them.

Best advice I can give you would be to find some other traditional shooters in your area or a club. Shouldn't be to hard since you are in Michigan.

I like the G. Fred Asbell books if you want to shoot instinctively.  I really like T.J. Conrad's book "The Traditional Bowhunter" if you want information on more than just shooting, such as equipment and making arrows, etc.

Rob DiStefano

books and vids are great, BUT you NEED to find a qualified one-on-one mentor.  there is NO media substitute for getting coached in person by a knowledgeable archer.  get that local help via a club or store and attend as many shooting events as possible.

I would look at Rick Welch's videos --- I think the latest video is called "The Accuracy Factory".
