I got a real crazy idea !!!

I want to make the biggest ...baddest primitive arrow ever made that killed a deer!
My ? Whats the "BIGGEST" arrow in weight and lenth that you ever shot or seen ???
I want it big ! more like a spear with a nock! I'll shoot it out of a tree stand no more than 12 yards. I'm not much worried about "SPEED"....as it will weight a bunch and I have no reason to think it will not go through a deer if I build the right bow for it and practice enough to hit where I need too.

I know ...CRAZY ...but its different and "US" primitives are !!! lol!

I don't remember the specs. Howard Hill shot an elephant whith an arrow your wanting to build.  You might try a search.

I've seen videos of some pretty long arrows(somewhere between 3-5 ft) used by the locals from some South American countries. They were shot up into the high canopy rain forest at warm blooded animals and into the water after fish.

Can primitive arrows be made from split woods or just shafts from growing plants/bushes/trees?

Just make sure you get extreme foc or it won't work!   :)    :)

I have a friend that made up a fishing arrow that was well over 1000 grains.... thats the biggest I have personally seen. I saw on tv some african natives using arrows about 5 foot long that im sure weighed pounds instead of grains.

I made and shot an arrow made from a 5/8" diameter dowel I bought at the hardware store.  I used full length flu flu's.  I shot the arrow at a target to qualify for the McMahon shoot off.  I was shooting my 85# Black Widow recurve then.  I aimed 3 feet to the left for the arrow to hit the mark.  It didn't paradox much.  That was fun.  P.S.  Be sure to secure the target.  It knocked the 3d deer target down

What about Ron laClairs "elephant arrow"? I remember seeing a picture of him at full draw with it somewhere, it was of broomstick proportions!

The last issue of primitive archer had a topic on south american hunting bows and arrows. They were huge! 5 and 6ft long, with 1000 grain heads, but they were efective. They had several pics of the arrow, and bows the natives were using.

I just read the arrow Howard Hill used to kill an elephant was a 41 inch aluminum with an enlarged version of the Hill broadhead weighing 1700 grains. The bow he used had a draw weight of 115 lbs.  Good luck

Ron LaClair

Here it is, 36" long, 3/4" diameter, shot from a 104# bow

A couple of my buddies in cumberland built arrows out of 3/4" dowel rod on the dare of there shop teacher. Maybe you can try that? I hope we get to meet sometime seeing as we both live in ohio.

Ron LaClaire.  Is that a Hill longbow?  Nice arrow. I would love to be young again and pull back a 100#  plus bow

Dang Ron, who did the coloration of that OLD picture? Just kidding. That made me laugh out loud when I saw it. That thing can do some serious work on just about anything walking(t-rex).
What kind of head is that? Looks like a single bevel
