What do you do with your elk ivory? Put up some ideas that you have or pictures of things that you have used them for.

Back in the days when men wore pocketwatches and not wristwatches, elk ivories were very popular as watch fobs. Especially among members of Elk Lodges.

I'v seen some nice rings, and some string ties, and neck chains, if you are into jewelery.  :bigsmyl:

How about a inlay in your bow, on a quiver or knife handle?

FerretWYO

I have seen a Zipper with them inlayed into the riser. They looked awesome.

I had two rings made, one for each of my daughters. The jeweler used just the top (crown?)
of the ivory. The shape was sort of oval-like, with the surface of the ivory flush or slightly above the gold ring. Not gaudy at all; a beautiful ring. This was about 9 years ago, I think I paid about $225 per ring.

As I recall the jeweler had to do the work after hours, because the grinding of the ivory had a pretty bad smell to it. Wish I could post a picture for you but neither ring is available to me. I would do it again, they turned out beautifully.

I'm waiting for a few good ideas.  I don't wear a necklace, (not that there's any thing wrong with that) but some like to wear them on a chain or leather string.

I like to hang the pair from my last elk on a leather thong around my neck while elk hunting.  It reminds me of past hunts and puts me in the right mind set to make the next kill.  It also reminds me that I am carrying a piece of that animal and every time I succeed in the field an animal losses its life.

I have half a dozen lying around.  I was going to make some cribbage pegs out of one to complement a moose antler cribbage board a made, but a buddy told me that ivories are hollow.  Can anyone confirm or deny if they are in fact hollow?

Lin Rhea

Yes, hollow. My wife had a ring made for me from one. The jewler sent the remainder of the ivory back in a zip lock bag and it was hollow. Lin

This is what mine look like now. I have another set to add though. I know there are some very creative people here and I was wondering what others do with their elk teeth.

elk ivory will be solid in a very old elk and even then you may find that there is a small hole in the center.

newb question.. are those teeth?

Are they really ivory or do hunters just refer to them that way?  Do other critters have ivory (besides elephants and whales)?
