Newbie to Traditional hunting

Hello Im new to the site so thought i would introduce myself before asking a question
My name is Ray i live in southern california, Ive been hunting and fishing for a majority of my life, my family is from south east louisiana so it was a way of life for them and passed on to me.

I am very interested in learning to hunt with traditional bow. I am looking at two models that my local bass pro shops carries right now. they are
pse impala recurve 28" draw at 55#
and the
PSE Sequoia Longbow 28" draw at 60#
I just shot both these bows and I can draw and shoot both no problem. so my question is which is better for hunting?

I hunt Rabbits, Turkey, deer and Boar

I am fairly new to trad as well.

If you are a compound convert, you will probably adjust to the recurve quicker. I shoot a hybrid combo between recurve and longbow.

You might also look around on this site and a couple of others for used bows and start a little lighter than you think you can pull.

See the other thread where a member is asking about first recurve on the first page right now.

PM me and I will send you links to a couple of classifieds you can find a bow as good or better than the PSE's for a third of the cost.

I would reccomend starting with a lighter draw weight - say around 45#. You have to have good form, consistent anchor, and smooth fluid release to ever get good with a trad bow and it is much easier to learn/master with a lighter draw weoght. From my experience watching new trad shooters, if they start with a higher draw weight, they tend to learn bad habits which never let them reach their full potential. I have even seen guys get frustrated and quit because of this. If you get "into" the trad thing you can move up in poundage. Just to add, a good shot from a 45# bow will kill just about anything in North America.

that was as a great read. I do need to find a local archery club, there area a couple of groups in pasadena that shoot only traditional, but that is a good 60+miles from me.

Ok ive gone and done it now, so i told my wife what two bows i as looking at and she went to basspro and bought me the Sequoia at the sales persons reccomendation. LOL She meant well and i love her to death but i did tell her i wanted to do some more research first. Oh well she is dropping off to me at work so i guess i will go by there after work and see if i can exchange it or return for store credit

I am about 3.5 weeks into traditional shooting and have shot a compound for about 20 years. I'm in good shape and am shooting a 45# Samick entry level.

I too would suggest a lighter bow as I wish I would have a 35# starter bow to really work on form. I have also been told it is harder to get a good release with a lighter pound bow which will benefit you down the road.

I'd recommend a low weight used or inexpensive starter bow to use for about your first 6 months. I too can shoot good with a 45# bow, but could shoot a lot more arrows for practice with a lighter bow.

For what it's worth. I'm pretty new to this traditional stuff, but I purchased a new Sequoia last year and love it(no problems with it at all and the price was tough to beat). However, if I had to do it over again I think I would shop the classified ads here and get something different.

neither at that wgt. start light, like about 40

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Im going to go to BPS during my lunch break and hopefully return what i have. I am going to take desert dude up on his offer and go to the Bear State shoot on sunday and try out a couple of bows to see what im comfortable with. the one that i shot at BPS that i fell in love with was the Martin Savannah #55

ok so i went back to BPS and returned everything, i have to say they where great they didnt hassle me at all.
