Pronghorn TD longbows...a length question

For those who own takedown Pronghorns and have a 28" draw, is there much difference between a 58" and 60" bow re stack? I'm looking for a used Pronghorn and would prefer the shorter version if stack isn't a problem. Thanks.

I draw 29 and I shoot a 60 incher, but I had a 56 inch and I didn't notice pinch or stack. My brother has a 58 inch and he draws it to 28.5 with no issues.

Dave, does Herb M. even make 58" TD bows anymore? I noticed they aren't listed on his website now.

Tony, I would send Herb an email regardng the 58" TD. I wouldn't doubt that he would make you one. I really don't think that you'll notice any "stack" difference between the 58" and 60". I have a 62" and 64" TD and notice no difference at all. My Pronghorns are the smoothest and quietest shooting longbows that I have.

I've shot a few of these in different lengths and stack won't be a problem. But you may find that one length vs another really dovetails better to you than another.
Maybe it will be the 58 incher. But maybe not. It has nothing to do with stack or pinch regarding such a nice bow. Just your individuality.
I hope you can shoot the different lengths just to make sure.

I would take Herb's recommendations on bow length--he knows his bows better than anybody and seems to prefer the 60" length.

Thanks for the feedback. Anybody know what the actual strung length is (measured tip to tip when strung) of a 58" and/or 60" Pronghorn? I sometimes use a turkey blind and short bows are handy there (thus my interest in a 58"er). Have heard these bows are a bit longer than other longbows of the same AMO.

I don't know if any of the others shoot split finger, but I had a moderate amount of finger pinch with a 60" TD pronghorn at my 29.5" draw length. No stacking, though.

I have several 62s and I draw about 29 or slightly more and that works well. I don't like the feel of the 60" bows, there not quite long enough but they usually shoot well though.
I been making strings for them lately and they are odd, being one inch longer than the stated size. I tye a 64 recurve with small loops for my 62s. And a 62 recurve for the 60s, which I have made a couple by accident when I was adjusting the board for some changes that I made to it. They are definitely one inch longer than the stated size.

Herb's take downs are longer than standard...put one next to a different make but in the same length and the Pronghorn will be longer.
I have 62" model than draws super smooth out to 31" for me. There's no other t/d longbow that I can do that with among the many I've tried.

I asked Herb about it when I was considering a one-piece model and on the one piece he recommended 64" for my draw.

He told me the t/d is a little long because he measures for it along the belly of the bow in roughly the same arc right across the riser. It's not really an exact measurement so the bow comes out a bit long.

There is no better 3 piece take down than one of Herb's Pronghorns in my opinion...you just cant go wrong with that bow.

Great bows, no doubt. Nothing is for free, however. Even without stack, if you have a very long draw, the shorter bows are likely to cause finger pinch for split finger shooters.

I have Pronghorns from 56"-66", and love them all.

Shedrock, that's quite a spread for bow lengths. Can I ask what your draw length is, and whether you see much difference in stack or finger pinch between your different Pronghorns? I'm not against longer bows (I'm partial to Howard Hills...maybe the king of 'long bows') but for a Pronghorn I'm hoping to get by with as short as I can for my 28" draw...without sacrificing smoothness of draw.

If the bow is made for a 28" draw, it shouldn't stack until after 28". One of the benifits of a custom made bow is that it won't (I should probably say shouldn't) stack until just after you reach your draw length.
Finger pinch is another story and that is determined by the angle that the string comes off the nock of the arrow t full draw. And that is determined by your draw length and the length of the bow nock to nock.

Pronghorns are great bows. Good luck finding the one you're looking for.

Thanks for the feedback, Craig. I did finally find a bow, in fact it just arrived today (58"). Turns out the length isn't an issue for either stack or pinch, it shoots fine at my draw length (even though tillered for 27") and is actually a 1/2" shorter when strung than is my 58" Super Shrew. The grip section on this one is amazingly short (apparently made for a small hand) but like a Hill still lends itself to a firm hold, which I prefer. Nice and quiet, very smooth and throws an arrow surprisingly quick for the poundage (around 48# at my draw).

You're right, Pronghorn's are nice little bows. I like this one.

I think this might be the bow your talking about? If so when I ordered the bow I was only drawing a little over 27". After some learning curve I now pull 29".
The bow does have a dainty little grip, but I think most of the Pronghorns have a slim grip. This bow had some of the best looking Osage I've seen. I orderd this one as the all Osage model, cores and all. A very very nice bow, it just didn't fit me, enjoy your new bow! She is a beauty!
