i shot a boar hog tonight that i'm guessing weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 200lbs. it was a short shot maybe 5yds, and a little rushed. i hit it about 4 or 5 inches above the elbow and maybe a tad back of it angled toward the head. so pretty much right in the shield. the pig ran off and about 70yds i heard what i thought was the arrow break then no noise. about a minute later i heard my arrow clanging on branches. it made a circle back to within say 75yds of where i shot it. it was going very slowly at this time, then nothing. no more clanging or rustling. my question is do you think my setup got through the shield or not. i shoot a 50lbs d/r longbow with about a 560gr carbon arrow, and had a magnus snuffer broadhead that was very sharp. i'm going back in the am to try and find it. wish me luck

Eric, the shot you desribe sounds good. Of all the hogs I've shot only one left a good blood trail. The others were sparse to say the least. Your set up would penetrate the shield but it sounds like you would have come in behind it and snuck it up into the boiler.

Go get your bacon, take pictures and let us know the results.

Apex Predator

If you hit him where you say, he is dead, dead, dead.  Keep us posted!
I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables!

my concern is the lack of penetration. i agree, i would bet that its dead also, but it seemed like there was alot of arrow hanging out when it ran off. on the other hand it looked like there should have been enough in him to do the job. we'll see in the morning.

I will be interested in the result here.

Good luck

I'll fire up the BBQ!

The lack of penetration may have been from not coming to full draw...you were rushed.

The few times I have been out I have drawn on several bucks and does that weren't shooters. It helped me to make SURE I could come to full draw with my heart pumping.

Sounds good to me. Let us know how you do.

Bjorn

You are right to go back in the AM. Hogs can be hard to find.........try to bring a friend or a dog. Let us know how you make out.
Your set up is completely up to the task in my mind.
With a rushed shot at close range it is hard to tell what happened exactly till you find the hog-the arrow is seldom where we thought it was.

BWD

One thing for sure if you find him tomorrow, the meat ought not to be spoiled. Suppose to be 18 deg. in middle Ga. in the morning.

thanks guys.
bjorn your probably right. something tells me it isn't where i think it is. i hope to find out tomorrow.
bwd your right about that. its liable to be frozen solid. i don't think i'm a very big fan of this cold weather.

Lowrider

Don't mean to butt in, but I would add to proceed slowly and with caution on one this large and maybe wounded.  However if the shot is as you think it was I agree with the others that he has expired by now. Blood trail may thin out after a while if it is like some I have followed up on. Look forward to hearing the rest of this story.

well i went back this morning to try and find the pig. i looked for about an hour before i had to go to work, and found nothing. there was no blood, no hair, no arrow, no piece of arrow, and no pig. after work my uncle and a coworker and i met my sisters boyfriend back at the wma. we looked from 3 till dark and found nothing. if i hadn't seen the arrow stuck in it i'd a swore i missed. i intend to go back again tomorrow and look some more. hopefully with better news.
