Are they used in longbows or only in recurves? How about moleskin under he limbs (to quiet it down)? Are these used on longbows or only  on recurves?

Recurves only. They keep pieces of foliage from getting caught between the limb and the string. They can make some bows loud as they do on one of my six recurves. You won't know about the noise factor until you try them as it will be different on each bow.

String slap can make some recurves very loud and moleskin where the string contacts the recurve limb is the solution to that problem.

So no brush buttons or moleskin on longbows, correct?

  Most people don't use brush buttons or moleskin on longbows But there are other methods to quiet a longbow starting with the correct arrows, brace height, string silencers, Padding the loops with wool yarn or other methods and about a dozen more ways but there are some longbows that shoot great with nothing but the string...Try setting your brace height a little higher or lower and work with different sized arrows matched up to your bow...Tell some folks here what kind of bow your shooting and someone might be able to steer you in the right direction...Different string material also makes a lot of difference but make sure your bow is set up for it first..Now if you have a recurve and wanting to put moleskin between the limb and riser just be careful cause it could cause a wedge and damage the limbs according to how thick a pc. you put on...Some recurves have a very thin plastic pc. to cushion between the limb and riser but just putting some string wax or vasaline can keep the noise level down...Don't over tighten your limb bolts either just a good snug is all it takes and check often that they don't vibrate loose if shooting a lot... You are correct, brush buttons and moleskin are for recurves. The trick to a quiet longbow will be brace height, bowstring choice, arrow spine and string silencers.
Experiment around, you will find the combination.

I like them on my recurve - definitely keeps brush from sticking in limbs and quiets my bow.
In my opinion string slapping on rubber is quieter than string slapping on wood.

I second what bama said- the old Bear Kodiak Hunter I used to shoot was pretty loud until I put the buttons on its string. They quieted it down a lot.

Longbows don't need those since there is not contact between the limb and the string.
