John3- The melanistic buck that Gene and Barry saw is more rare than an albino. They saw him and passed him up for a few years. This year he was 4 1/2 and after he showed up on some of the late summer set camera photos, he's all Gene thought and talked about. But once the season started, Tyrone proved just how hard it is to hunt for only one buck. Odds go to the buck! Ha!
I'm glad they captured video footage of him in his younger years to be shared with all in our next production. Rumor has it a black doe has been seen. Stay tuned! Mike

Ray Hammond

we've got a melanistic doe on our place in SC as well....she stands out at least as much as a white deer would- you can see her coming a 1/2 mile away sometimes.

Really cool. I'm hoping she drops some little bucks for us.

I knew the Tyrone type whitetail must be rare as rare can be. Until I read Gene's book I cant remember ever hearing about a melanistic deer. COOL !!

If a doe exists I would let her walk hoping for another Tyrone buck in a few years.

Thanks Gene. Sounds very promising, good lick, our season is over until 2010, I'll live my post season through you and others exploits until then!

Oh, gotcha Barry.  Well good luck to the both of you and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for sharing -- glad to hear some positive hunts it has been very depressing in Wisconsin the DNR / preditors ( wolves, now cougars)have really depleted our deer density. Unfortunately our DNR feels the perfect deer density for our state is one deer per 40 acres of huntable land. The good news for our neighboring states is it should be a wind fall in the economy as we travel to enjoy our love of quality hunting. Please share more positive stories the hunters in Wisconsin can use the hope of better things to come!!!

Well dang.... I'm a little bummed about Tyron.   :(   I was really pulling for you Gene. It would have been cool to have the hero picture of the two of you in the Highlights section of this site.

There went my Christmas.

Enjoying the read.  Can only dream.  The storm that just left here should help keep the deer moving.  Rightminded
