My wife is thinking she wants to get involved with Trad Bow Hunting.  Anyone have any suggestions on what she should look at?   I am not at home right now - Deployed in Iraq and won't be back home till next year.   She has been deer hunting since she was about 10 years old and has hunted with a compound in the past - Killed more deer than me- She is an Alabama girl I am from Colorado so I haven't had the opportunity she has had.   :(    She is tall and slim - 5'10 - about 140 lbs - Got Any Suggestions??

I would start her out with something like 30 lbs or so. I would not spend alot of money on her first bow. I would check here in the classifieds there are commonly some 30-35 lb recurves and longbows for sale there. Then once she is "addicted" I would go get her a custom bow.

Start her out with a light weight and see where it goes from there.  Sounds like she already has the mechanics down just needs to learn how to shoot without aids.  You can get here started with a cheaper production bow or any of the bowyers should be able to build her a custom.

Starting off with the lighter bows allows for building strength as well as working on form. Less pain is more gain through more practice...
Also. Mike at Maddog makes some good, smaller scale bows at very reasonable prices...

i would get her a bow that is at least 40# @28".  she will most likely not draw 28", but that is the legal limit for weight for large game hunting in alot of states.  Stay light, but she seems to want the hunting option also, so make it legal.

Hi Keith, Thanks for serving!  I would check the hunting regs for the hunting weight bow and get her a legal weight bow, I agree with most here about getting a 30@28 bow for starters, that will develope her form faster.

My wife is about the same size and she has a long wing span. She draws a full 29", so keep in mind that as she develops good form her draw length will grow. I started her off with a real nice Zipper recurve I found on the classifieds. It was 40#@28 and that was a little heavy to start her out with. She now shoots around 36#@29" and it's about right. I would start out with a bow a little lighter if I was doing it over and work up to the state minimum for hunting. You can find some great custom bows on the classifieds on this site and resell them if you need something different. Also, A BIG thanks for your service to our country.

Is she right or left handed? Does she use sights on her compound? What weight is she drawing on her compound? Draw length?

I found a Wing, Swift Wing at a flea market.  About 47 years old and in remarkable condition, near new.  It's a 62" bow, 27#@28".  It has served my wife well when she joins me for recreational shooting, she's not a hunter. I got the bow, a case, a dozen old cedars, for a whopping $25.    These old bows are around in hunting weights as well.

I bought my wife a Great Northern Field Bow a few years ago at Compton. Its 28#@28" 60". She doesn't hunt yet but loves shooting it. May try them out.

Thanks Guys!  I better keep the wife - she is pretty hot and I don't think I can do much better!    Plus she love hunting and allows me to spend my $ on hunting, go on trips and never complains.  

She has about a 28 inch draw and about a 40#  - she has killed numerous deer with a compound but is a bit worried about how much practice it will take to be good.   She hates to miss!

I would probably place a wanted add in the classifieds for a 35 to 40# bow and see what comes up.Something with a little mass weight in the riser might be better for a starter bow and maybe a smaller grip would be nice for her depending on hand size.A one piece recurve would be good or maybe a 3 PC curve or 3 PC longbow.
