I was out shooting today and had 5 field points come off. It was 16 degrees out. Not sure if that had something to do with it. I have shoot and used these arrows many times during the spring, summer and fall. I use Ferr-L-Tite hot melt Adhesive. I have never had this prolbem before. Well not 5 points in one shooting practice. Could it be the cold weather? Could it be the time the field points have been on the arrows...around 6 mths? Or could it be just a coincidence?

I have not had good results with any hot melt in cold temps. Switched to Franklin tite-bond sub-floor adhesive in the tubes with good results. Carpenters use it for laying plywood. It stays flexible. Hot melt gets too brittle.

The Ferrel cement used for fishing rod tips is what I use it is also flexible in cold temps and I like it.

I've never had issues with hot melt in cold weather.  Glue them again and see if it was just coincidence.  Don't use too much glue and make sure it is applied around the taper well.

They can come off in cold weather,Fer-l-lite is to brittle from my experience.I use a white colored hot melt, they hold better and stay more pliable.I was at a 3D shoot and it was so cold that ice was forming on my beard. It sounded like I hit a tree when I hit the targets, lost four points in the first five targets so I quit. That was the last time I used Fer-l-lite fof putting on points.

Did you sand and clean the inside of the points before you glued them on?

I use the yellowish colored hot melt sticks from the "Home Depot" type stores as it is stiffer than the clear stuff but still flexible.  Ferrule-Tite is too brittle for my liking for the reasons you experienced.

I'm with mightybow, most problems I see come from a failure to clean the inside of the field tip and score it to give some tooth for the glue to hold on to. I use Ferrule Tite for, of all things, Ferrules on bamboo flyrods. It works great and I've had no problems down to near 0 degrees, but I clean the inside of the tip with acetone and then score it a bit with a small ball-tip bit in my Dremel.

These tips will help you keep your field points, regardless of the glue used.

Hope this helps,

Kevin

I've had probs. w/ hot melt.  Went to 1-2 drops of super glue years ago.  Slam the point into place on a hard surface. Never had one come off since.  If you want to change the pt. --just heat up over the stove--it will come right off.  So ask yourself-- Just what is the advantage of hot melt, anyway?  Its got me stymied.  Its more hassle to use, and does not hold as well.

i use epoxy and they never come off unless ys heat it up.

I used to have trouble in the winter with hot melt  I found that the problem was not the glue but not sealing the shaft under the tip.  Water from shooting into wet bales swells the wood and breaks the glue joint.  Gasket lacquer is another problem.  Great finish but not waterproof.  After tapering the shaft, spray a sealer on the wood.  It will help.

Hot Hap

Clean them good and I regrind my taper to bare wood after my final dip. Hap
