I hunted on the ground exclusively this year and it never ceases to amaze me how deer can pinpoint where a call comes from! I've had several circle to get down wind of me! "unfortunately just out of my range" I've had luck getting them to come in but when they do they are looking for what made that noise! I've found it hard to get drawn in these situation's! How do you guy's feel? Jason

Personally, I threw away my grunt tube 15 years ago.  I don't like to give them any more idea I'm around than necessary.  I don't fool with scents, lures etc for the same reason.

If their responding to your calls, continue using it and learn to work the situation.
Be sure you have adequate cover behind you to break up your outline and be still!
Even if they pin point where the call is coming from if your well concealed they won't see you. Just wait for them to make the mistake.  Eventually the deer will turn their head, look away from you or perhaps begin to quarter away. That is when you make your move!
And it always helps to practice snap shooting. I've killed quite a lot of deer by snap shooting.
You don't always have, or are given the time to take a slow deliberate draw and run through your shot sequence as you would when target shooting. It always pays to be able to draw and shoot in one fluid fast motion, (snap shooting)never know when it will make the difference between packing meat or not packing meat!
 

The last two years the grunt and doe bleat have been totally non effective.  They take a look and if they don't see something they keep moving.  I used to pull them in all the time with those calls.  I think there are too many people using them and the deer are wise to them.  I still have them and will probably still try them when I know the deer is passing and will not be back.  Last ditch thing for me in my area.

I have played every tune except the national anthem on a grunt call and I have gotten is chapped lips.Never had luck with the can either,I guess you have to be where there are some deer....lol.I hardly ever use them now.

If calls are working keep using them.I call in deer every year by calling to deer when i can see their reaction to my calls,that way i can work the deer.I like to turn my head and call behind me to make the deer think the deer it hears is past my location.When the deer comes in they are not looking where you are sitting.Do not call as long as the deer is coming in.just make sure you have enough cover to hide youself in.Move slow and take the first good shot you get.

The secret to calling anything is making sure it can't get down wind of you.  Set up so that they have to go in the open or more open woods or with a creek at your back.  Almost everything will try to go down wind deer and coyotes have tought me that well.  Those animals are amazing at finding the exact spot you called from.
