I have been using 100gr Brass inserts on my carbons, however I always seem to be loosing them, either with them pulling out when pulling an arrow out of a stump (loosing the point in the process)or the shaft is damaged but because they are glued in I can't seem to salvage them (I have a hard time getting the epoxy and carbon shaft off to use it in another arrow).

I know that some might think just buy more, but at about a buck a piece they seem a bit more too me I guess.  Plus noone sells them in my area so mail-order is the only way of getting them.

Anybody use anything else?

I worked for a archery shop that used the brown "hot melt" sold by Saunders and others. We dind't even clean the inside after cutting.  :eek:

The "range" there (indoor) was masonite so it was a BEAR to pull arrows...and y'know, them stinking inserts didn't ever seem to pull out!!!

I actually switched. a good stout belt knife or a Leatherman type tool has helped me retrieve shafts stuck in stumps.  I might loose the field point but I dig out enough to turn it loose and safe the shaft and insert.

ON broken ones, reheating with a field point just enough to remove the insert has worked very well using the 'brown hot melt'.

Gold Tip used to also sell all thread cut to 30 gr. length. It's simply 8-32 all thread from the hardware store, but was "black". Duh. Inside the shaft, so what?

They also sold brass sleeves that threaded OVER the all thread and fit INSIDE the GT shaft. Of course, the alum. insert required it was threaded all the way through...but many of the carbon inserts (alum) were so it was moot.

That is another alternative. I think it was pdp or some outfit also made weights that threaded into the back of "threaded through" alum. inserts. You could add what you wanted.

I used the short GT "all thread" and 3 weights to get my total to 1XX gr.(some odd # with the alum insert at 29gr. or something like that. The brass inserts were easier...but they do get pricey by the dozen.

If I break a shaft and want to salvage the brass insert I just use a propane torch and melt the carbon and glue off.I don't use heat on new or good carbon arrows but if I'm trying to salvage an insert.When I install brass inserts I like to fit them to the arrow.I mount a point in a drill and spin it and file a slight taper on it where the insert meets the shaft.I do this so it has a smooth transition from the shaft to the insert.It removes the little lip so it doesn't catch so much in some targets.And while it is on the drill I'll rough up the insert with sandpaper to give it some teeth for the epoxy to hold.I also etch or scratch the inside of the shaft and clean everything with alcohol.I then use a 2-part 24 hr. epoxy and haven't lost any inserts.

I use Easton 2 part 24 hr epoxy to glue the inserts in.  Haven't lost any stump shooting or "rock shooting" either.  I've broken a few shafts in the process and always been able to salvage the inserts by heating them up with a torch, sliding them out of the shaft, and cleaning them up on a wire wheel.

I too use 100gr brass inserts and use a glue from hobby lobby and have never lost one yet! I love grass inserts! I think this glue is called extreme power? or something. Antway it works well.

I use them and just make sure to clean the shafts inside and the outside of the insert with acetone.  I use marine expoy, it is grey when mixed to glue them in.  I haven't lost an insert since I started using the marine epoxy.  Heat will break down most glue enough for you to get the insert out of a broken shaft.

Should have thought of the heat idea, DUOH!!!  I even have one of those pen style butane torches, should work great.  Thanks for the idea!

Proper prep. and two part, slow setting epoxy should cure your problem.
