I have not done any deer hunting the past 2 years and decided to take the time to get a couple of landowner tags and an archery any sex tag.  I don't care much for deer venison but I know someone that would like to have the meat so I am hunting again.  I hunted last weekend in Southern Iowa and on Saturday passed on a decent 140-150 class buck.  I have the sheds from two 160-170 class deer on this property, that I found scouting last March and didn't want to squander my any sex buck tag for anything less.  Sunday was hot and the wind blew hard all day.  I saw 9 deer on Saturday, none on Sunday.  I had to make a trip to Wyoming this week and did not have time to hunt.

I was doing some dirt work with my skidloader and saw this little buck in my neighbors driveway.

He was tagging along with a doe and a small 8 point buck.  I nonchalantly drove my skidloader over to my truck and got my bow.  The deer had slipped into my nearby woods behind my house.  I was able to stalk up behind a pile of big round bales and that put me about 40 yards from the deer.  I waited for an opening and let an arrow fly.

A good sign.

More good sign.

This deer was piled up about 50 yards from point of impact.

Yours truly.

I still have a landowner doe tag and a regular any sex tag I hope to have a chance to fill.  My wife and I have both been seeing three nice bucks coming and going along the woodlot trails around my house.  The last three deer I have taken have been shot right in my own yard, from on the ground, no camo.  Mostly just a matter of taking opportunity when I see it, not that I spend much time hunting.  I think maybe I should just hang around the house instead of taking the trouble to drive an hour and a half , hang treestands and sit waiting all day.

A skid steer makes a dandy game retrieval unit.
