How do you determine the spine of wood arrows

I thought I put this question on here yesterday, but I can't find it.

How do you determine the spine of wood arrows. I inherited about 75 wood arrows and I am wondering if any of them are suited for my bows.  The arrows are new up to about 2 years old.

You can make or buy a spine tester.  I made this one out of junk stuff lying around.

So is it like carbon arrow?  26" and 2 pounds?  Does that chart coorelate the deflection to the spine?  If the arrows are already made up, do you do it parallel or perpendicular to the knock?

reddogge

Wood arrows are tested at 26" with 2# weight and carbon is something else I read.  I measure across the grain (perpendicular to the knock). That chart is a spine chart for wood, fiberglass, aluminum and gives you the spine for each deflection.  I don't know a thing about carbon arrows.

You don't really need the chart though.  Divide the inches of deflection measured on the spine meter into 26 inches and you get the basic spine rating of the arrow in pounds.

Example:  If the Deflection is .525 then .525 divided INTO 26 equals 49.5 pounds.  That's the spine rating of the shaft for a 28 inch arrow.

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

This is true you don't need a chart but it comes in handy testing a bunch of shafts and eliminates all that calculating.

I just got back to work and I had an email here saying it got moved to the PowWow.  For some reason it didn't show up on my search.
