we need to start getting things worked out for the hunt as far as who's bringing what and who's riding with who etc etc....we will be having three camps in my estimation as to not over saturate any one area.i have everything for one camp except tents.i have one that holds two people and gear.i think if everyone brings a tent then we should be ok.bring a good sleeping bag,i recommend a 5 pound bag as it can and does get plenty cold up there at times.seen it down to single digits.everyone chime in with your ideas, thoughts and plans. '''git'er done'''

Although the terrain is fairly mild, I recomend a good pair of boots and very important is a good pair of hiking socks. Hiking socks have extra padding and make a huge difference when covering a lot of ground. Danner Boots has good socks and the Danner Pronghorns worked quite well this past season.

Bring at least a 2200 cubic inch pack. A hydration unit is a plus, but you can get away with water bottles. If you have a 3500 inch, you won't need a pack frame. If you just bring a small pack, I recomend bringing a pack frame. The nice thing about Larry's area, is that there are roads everywhere, so you are never more than a mile from a road.

If you plan on renting a car, I would make it a 4 wheel drive if the cost isn't extreme in difference.

If you can't afford the 4 wheel drive a 2 wheeled vehicle will work fine for 80% of the area you will be hunting.

If you have not hunted elk in the past, I recomend purchasing some Primos or Larry Jones videos for review. Knowing how to set up on bulls and being able to make that immediate decision takes practice. I am a greenhorn for the most part, but I have had decent success in the last 4 seasons.

A good sleeping pad is a must. Town is close, but you will want to determine what you are going to have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I doubt I will be there with you guys next year. I am hunting the first 2wks. of the season and more than likely in the Eagle Cap Wilderness or on the edge of it.

If I can assist anyone in anyway, don't hesitate to PM me.

Good luck to all of you guys.

I think that I will be doing either a drop camp or a DIY in Eagle Cap, same as Paul.

But this will be a great hunt for everyone, I had a blast this year! Larry, watch out for Rick, he is quite the killing machine and one heck of a nice guy.

EAGLE CAPS??????....so not fair   "[dntthnk]"  grrrrrrrr....man i love the caps....soooooooo tempting.wish i had a string of horses and 6-8 mules and a leg that didnt throw fits at the worst times.i've lost twelve pounds allready and by next sept i'll be ready to go non stop like i used to.paul and buckster if you go into the caps you'd be better off going all the way in.lot more elk and some huge bulls in there.i'd tell ya exactly where to go but then i'd have to erase your memories   :D

Hey there Elkherder. I plan on making it next year for the tradgang hunt. I need to get my but working out. I have never done any big game hunting other than whitetail deer. Can you give me some pointers and info on what i'll need. I wish I could have made it with been but I would've been a burden. I have a sierra designs 3 man 4 season mountineering tent. I need a cot I can't stand my sleep pad I get almost no sleep and its a thermarest prolite 4. GO figure top of the line sucks.I have a badlands 2200 and a 4500 ci packs w/ hydration bladers.I need to order my new boots. I have an A width foot so no one makes boots to fit me off the shelf.I should have all the wool clothing I will need by then. I have some filson pants and a vest i need shirts. I will also have a wool coat by then. I also have wool underwear. I shoot 7-900 grain arrows out of my 45 and 55 pound bows.  Let me know what you think.

Looks like I will be riding up with Maury from southern Calif. He has a 4x4 new Tundra. looks like either his tent trailer or tents for us. We have a couple of pop-up awnings, camp table, lanterns, tarps, ice chests, camp stove, 15gal fresh drinking water. Larry, do you think Maury &I can get a tent trailer in to our camp spot? What ever else you need from us let us know.

i use predator camo...any brand of camo that has a good broken pattern will do...just pretend you're going on a weeklong deer hunt/camping trip...good tent, bag, heavy coat for bad weather, heavy socks/light socks.we will need all of the utensils, stoves etc for two camps...i have everything for one camp including one tent but we will need several per camp.i'd say two people per tent is ok.we will buy all the grub in burns the day we all meet at the truck stop in hines.i suggest getting a cow call...primos hoochie momma and baby hoochie are good...i found a new one this year that works great...primos cowgirl...works great on bulls,i took the bottom (bell)off of it and it sounds pretty real, cows loved it and the bulls scream at it.

Most inportent items. a shovel and tp. Larry let me know what else I can bring. I'm set up on most if not all my gear. Starting now to get in shape, I want to be able to Hunt, and pack out elk as needed. I also have pots, pans, paper plates, and things along that line.

rent some elk videos and watch them over and over until you are an elk callin machine...practice is very important.keep at it until you are a good caller.i can sound like several elk by myself but if you have two guys doing the same then you sound like a group of elk and thats a good thing.

tent trailor may drag on the water diversion ditches they have across the road every 100 feet it seems...tents would be best so he doesn't trash his trailor as its fairly rough gettin into the spot i want to camp at.its his choice but i would do the tent and cot thing.

Will do, Just tell what I need to do and learn. My new bow came in a little on the lite side (54#) about 56# @29" I was hoping it would be closer to 60#. We have a trad shoot this weekend in Pasadena and I'll put her through the mill. I think I'm going to send her back for one closer to 60# where I'm more comfortable. My arrows are right at 600gr with either the new (just got today) VPA 250gr 1 1/4 or a Eskimo 4bld. I'm a gear guy, worked in the archery biz for 6 years while also serving in the navy. I'm eating this stuff up!!!!!!!!!!

Larry, I've got a M-1950 canvas squad tent that I can throw in the mix as well.  Can hold 6 dudes, but I would say 3 or 4 and their gear, plus heating element.  Just made a new bow with John Strunk, so I may wait until then to use her...
