Just returned from a public ground hunt near Gavins Point Nebraska with a few of my closest friends.
This was to be a selfbow only hunt, we all had stonepoints and bone points mounted on rivercane and cedar arrows. I had only one rivercane arrow tipped with a stone point, the rest were cedars and 145 grain grizzlies-
Long story short, I chose to hunt on the ground and set my ambush in what appeared to be a well traveled route, two deer came in mid day and offered a 10-12 yard shot- I was so tore up! shooting an arrow i made with wrapped turkey feathers, stone point and selfknocked etc... well I shot low right under the chest and managed to jam some hair in between the stone point and the rivercane- no blood just hair so I was relieved that all in all a clean miss not a wounded deer.
So an hour or so later 3 more deer come through and I am standing this time with my ghillie suit on and ready, the shot was six yards or closer- man what a rush to hunt with a selfbow on the ground and on public ground! This was my first selfbow kill and the first deer I've taken on public ground!
A great hunt with my best friends, these are the times I live for!

We shot arrows into the lake to honor those that came before us and some of our friends who have passed on.

Well we could have had more than one deer in that tree but i kinda had a WTF moment! With osage selfbow in hand, cedar arrow with homemade bone point on end and a doe at 7 yards I came to full draw Picked a spot and watched it fly directly over her back. Oh well I had an awseome time. At least I had a shot and was able to have a deer so close, and was able to spend time in GOD'S Country with good friends.
Its not the size of the animal you hunt that matters. Its how you hunt the animal.

Wow that is Great... Congrats on a nice deer.

Tell Us about your bow Please.

The bow was bought from a fellow TradGanger, it's a John Strunk Osage selfbow 53@27 66" snakebacked, shoots really well although I'm scared to death drawing it to 29 but it seems to spit an arrow very well! A beautiful bow, I love hunting with it!

Thanks Doug! I'm chasin a really nice one up around my parts, hopefully get him in the next few weeks before the orange army shoots up the woods. We're thinking of going back up there so let me know if you would like to come along, maybe you can show us the "good" spots!

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

Missed a doe with my self bow and am still trying to break the ice. Got a couple more weeks before the season ends. Nice shooting.
