I'll be out in the morning for the first time in two weeks...being sick over a 4 day weekend (last weekend)really stinks!!

Calling for snow by late morning, so hopefully the morning movement will be good.

Then maybe a snowy Saturday afternoon and morning hunt on Sunday!!

Up and ready to go out. So far it has been a less than super year in the woods. A total of 7 deer that could have been shot at so far, 5 doe and 2 spike bucks. I let them walk. The doe all had fawns with them and the young bucks had about 6 inch spikes. Maybe one of the bigger bucks will be looking for the 2nd rut. I sure must have been sleeping for the first rut, never seen a scrap.

I got lazy and didn't go out, no other reports. Must have been a slow day during the storm....

Ghostdancer, DEC does not want us to know the truth. Coyotes do kill as many deer as I think they do and more. Just take a walk in an area after a heavy snow in in my area and you would see for yourself. Rabbits and other game are plentiful where I hunt, just ask the 90 or so bunny hunters who came to my hunt last year. Coyotes in my arae do not bother with rodents and small game, why when they can eat venison. It may just be the strain we have here, but my bud killed 3 females last week and they averaged 45#s the largest was 52#s and that is a female. We have males going over 60#s and regardless of what you have read coyotes kill way more than ya think. Shawn

Oct 09 issue of buckmasters has an artical "who let the dogs out" studies show a significant increase of deer hair in yote scat during the fawning season...

Thats part as well as those that don't get reported (50% is probably correct unfortunately)
I do think it's from both cause's and those that do shoot alot like Shawn typically have an area or area's that may be bow only or some other thing where there may be more deer to shoot.I hunt next to a park and have no problem shooting a doe there compared to behind my home just depends on hwere ya are I guess

I am not trying to be argumentative, however:

I am sorry but there is no conspiracy with the DEC and the researchers.  I personally know some of them myself.  Besides, it is not in their interest to lie.  Most of the researcher are graduate students who are determined to know the truth.  Besides, you can get more than 2 civil servant to agree on anything let alone a conspiracy, I can attest to that.

If coyotes killed so many deer than why are there so many does and fawns each year?  In addition, why would a coyote work to kill a deer and potentially get hurt when it could kill something much easier.  There is a cost benefit analysis.

Besides, I guarantee that hunters are not reporting all they kill.  I was in a sport shop several years ago and a guy was bragging that he shot 17 does.  He was escorted out of the shop by the owner and called a slob and a few other choice words.  

So again, if coyotes are so successful and kill as many deer as hunters, than 500,00 deer a year die in NY plus 30,000 from car accidents ... in total (250,000 + 250,000 + 30,000) 530,00 certainly not realistic.  

It is easy to villainize and scape coyotes ... "when after all it was you and me."

Lastly, I have yet to get one with a bow.  They are great sport and each time I have failed, I have more respect for the evasive and elusive abilities.  

... and each year I have less respect for hunters based upon what I see and hear.

Well, Last night I tucked away the "DEERSLAYER" for another year!!!!!(still meatless)

Anyone hunting the "late season"?????

I hope to get out both days this coming weekend for another "stab" at it!!!!!  

Going to try to get out this week if the weather is resonable. Going to be noisey in the woods, we had rain sunday and its gonna turn cold.But still better than work.....lol!!

Even if you can't "see" the deer,at least you'll hear them!!!

I have seen a ton of deer this year. I r-r-rifle hunted, and had a great time watching deer almost every day. Didnt find myself wanting to shoot any of them though...I hunted hard and loved every second of it.
I will be heading out for the late season, alternating smoke pole and bow. I guess Im making up for not getting out enough earlier in the year.

Just something about watching the woods wake up...good luck to all still heading out.
