This morning was cool and breezy, but a nice sunrise foretold of a good day to come. I was on a high spot, looking for the flock of turkeys that I saw yesterday. Yesterday was opening for turkey season, and I had played tag with a flock of about 30 birds for over two hours. They managed to be just out of range or across the creek, so I finally called it good, and decided to try to find them today. Well, at sunrise, I glassed the area where they were yesterday, and lo and behold, they were there again. I had about a 1/2 mile to gain before I would be close to them, so off I went, using terrain and high sagebrush as cover. I got within about 50 yards, and they are coming, slowly closing the distance, and since I had run out of cover, it was time to wait and see what transpired. Minutes later, they are within range, and I let an arrow fly, only to see a bunch of birds jump out of the way. Now I have them somewhat spooked, and off they go up a small hill. As they crest the top, I run to the top as fast as my old legs will carry me, and danged if they aren't about 20 yards out, milling around. I pick a bird, find my anchor, and release. When the arrow hits, the hen goes down like a sack of potatoes; never even quivered. The new Pronghorn is no longer a virgin! Now I need to find a deer or antelope that will cooperate.
