I'm so ready for deer season which opens tomorrow Oct 1 in Illinois!! Hooray!!
Have my ground blind set up and shot a few arrows from it Sunday. Not going near it until tomorrow morning.

So I have the Bear razors but the bleeders go in very loose. Question is how to make the nice and tight OR what if I just don't use them? Big difference?

On a side note. My blind has those shoot thru screens (I think they are shoot thru). I have not shot an arrow thru a screen, so does it affect the shot very much? I'm thinking of pulling them down when I enter tomorrow but the velcro is noisy. Suggestions?

As far as I remember, the bleeders should lock into place when slid back towards the shaft of the arrow.

If you never shot an arrow through the mesh, I would either remove it as quietly as possible in the AM, or shoot an arrow through it as a test when there are no animals around. I wouldnt want to miss or wound a deer finding out, either way.

I have never used the bleeders myself. They were designed to cut a 4 blade hole in the skin,then bend or break away after contact with heavy bone. Personaly I don't like the thought of having loose razorblades inside the deer that I'm dressing out.

As for the screen, sorry I can't help you. However,I would tend to agree with Jamie. If you haven't shot through it,I would drop it down in the morning,preferably immediately after arriving at your blind. That way any noise or disturbance you made getting there and the noise of the vecro will all be together and then things can settle down after.

I wouldn't bother with the bleeders personally.The head in it's 2 blade configuration will do the job.

I've heard the black holes from a GB will spook deer,that's why the mesh is there.I say try the screens down for the morning hunt,especially if you've never shot through them.Maybe bring a portable target for later after the hunt to test them out.

Shooting thru mesh is just like shooting thru nothing. Psychologically it can mess you up if you don't trust it. Try a shot or two with a sharp cut on contact head just to settle your mind.

Well guys you've answered all my questions and thanks.
I've tested shooting out of the blind with the screens down and I hold right at the window. I don't think I'd have enough whoosh at release not to get messed up. I'm going to try it when nothing's on the line like Bill said. Tomorrow AM I'm going to peel them down real quiet like and be ready.

I hope you have better luck with the black hole effect than I did. I always use the mesh when hunting deer out of my blind, they do not like the black hole effect that is caused when the mesh is down.

The bleeders will seem to be a little loose, they were designed that way.  I would use them cause it does make a much bigger hole which makes a better blood trail.  The shoot thru mesh works great!  I've taken one deer and my 12 yr old has taken 2 by shooting through the mesh with no problems.  Deer do not like the black holes but with the mesh you will get by with movement.

How can I know it is shoot thru mesh? I'm assuming that's what Ameristep uses. BTW, can you replace this stuff once you shoot thru it? Or just leave it there with holes?

Are the blinds not waterproof?  I thought that's why lots of folks used them.  

The inserts lock into a divot in the ferrule.  They are supposed to be moveable.

I've shot Bears many years w/o bleeders. IMO, they fly & penetrate better.

I've shot Bears since 1965 and always used the bleeders. Better blood trails,IMO. If it was good enough for Fred it's good enough for me.

Put a little fleching glue where the bleeders fit into the divot on the ferrule..Tightens them up.

Good suggestions all around. I don't know if he screens are waterproof but when I get in next time I will find out. It poured buckets today.

I guess you're supposed to replace them after you shoot thru them if they are waterproof.
