I am wanting to buy a recurve for the first time and am asking a little help. I currently shoot a 65lb. compound bow with a 29" draw. I am looking to buy a used Zipper extreme 60" 58# 28" draw asking $550 or a Hummingbird King fisher 60" 48# 27" draw asking $550. Opinions on which bow would be better to purchase, I like the way both of them look. I am kind of thinking the 58# might be a little heavy for a beginner. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If that's the way you're thinking, you're probably right.  The Hummingbird is a great bow, and at the lower draw weight you're less likely to develop bad habits...Welcome!  

I agree that the 58 may be a little heavy for just starting with a curve. You need a bow that will not cause you to struggle with the weight.
To heavy a draw will cause many bad habits and poor form when learning.
The Kingfisher at 48# @ 27" will be about 51# at 28" which is about what your draw length will be if you drew 29" with a compound, would be my choice.

A bowyer once told me it is common to drop 20% or more from you compound weight to a traditional bow.  That would put you at 52#.  My experience with customers has been very similar to what the bowyer recommended.  That said, the 58# is well over what I would recommend.  The 48# is nice but I wouldn't shy away from 50#.

Buy the 48#.  It will be a good task getting into that much weight at first.  You can always build up to a heavier weight if that's what you decide. Ben Graham can then make you a set of limbs...I'm assuming that Kingfisher is a t/d?

I went with the Hummingbird Kingfisher 60" 48# 27" bow and can't wait to shoot it. Thank you guys for the input.
