Anyone having luck sharpening Grizzlies with the KME Knife sharpener?

I have some 160 grain (orange) that I've just started trying to sharpen...I have all the stones KME offers for the sharpener (diamond included) and have started on one with the Dark course stone.  I'm starting it off at about 28 degrees with the course stone but I think I may need to choose a different angle.  I couldn't find a marker to see if the edge is getting worked fully (looked very close).  I have since found one at work that I will take home and use for a reference.

I'm up for the challenge and will sharpen for an hour or more a day until they're sharp...I have a black bear to kill in September and these are what I'm going to use!

Couple of question:
Question #1...what is the best oil for the stones?  I believe Ron stated with the super fine Arkansas Hone not to use oil...maybe both white stones if I remember correctly.  I will be using oil on the two dark stones and the orange colored stone.

Question #2...If I start to sharpen a knife or broadhead with the diamond stones and then change to the Arkansas stones what angle do I need to change...can't remember if I need to add 1 degrees or subtract 1 degrees.

For the record I took the two white colored stones to a knife I sharpened with the diamonds and they put an amazing edge on the knife...it has a mirror edge!

Love this tool!

For stones, I use "Gunk - Liquid Wrench".  Ron and I talked about this, and it is one of the things he recommends.  Plus, being an aerosol, you get the added benefit of "cleaning' the surface with the expelled pressure of the spray.  Diamonds just need water.

sorry, no answer for question #2....

FWIW - you should get some pre-sharpened heads  from Ron, and save those for practice heads... you have a long grind ahead of you....

Thanks Bob...figure it's something I can do when I can't sleep at night.  I've had some long nights lately since I don't get out of work until 12 am and I'm up to around 4 am...plenty of time to learn.

I looked at some of the new 25 degree left bevels at Denton...they look great.  If they had some right wing in stock I would have bought them in a heartbeat.

Josh,

Good seein you at Denton. You too Bob, and Dave, you gotta make it to Denton one of these years!

Josh, I wouldn't think of doing even one "out of the pack" Grizzly using only the knife sharpener. You gotta file them to somewhere near sharp first, then use the knife sharpener to finish them up. The steel is very hard and you gotta take a lot of it off. There's no stone that I'm aware of that's up to the task. We guarantee the coarse, medium, and fine stones but the x-coarse ceramic and all diamond stones will wear out. Remember those nice radius tooth files we had on the table?    :)  and all those pre-sharpened Grizzlies too?  :p  Honestly, you're severely under-gunned without a file.

Question #1- Use oil on ALL the ceramic and Arkansas stones. My favorite is CRC Screwloose or as Bob suggested, liquid wrench. Almost any lightweight oil is fine but I don't like WD-40 (it clogs the pores of the stones). Use water on the diamonds with a drop or two of dish liquid mixed in.

#2 Because the diamond stones are thinner than the ceramic/Arkansas, start the diamonds at 1 degree lower than you plan to finish up with the ceramics/Arkansas.

Give me a call if you need some help, Thanks

I tried the Grizzlies last year and the most difficult part was establishing that initial edge.  What really worked slick for me was the KME broadhead sharpener and my belt sander.  Clamp the head in the broadhead sharpener and lay it on the belt with the the edge AWAY from the direction the belt is rotating.  The roller on the sharpener lays lightly right on the belt as well.  Use extreme caution though - power tools and sharp objects are a dangerous combination!
Once that initial angle is established the rest is a piece of cake with either of the KME sharpeners.

Thanks Ron I've talked to you at Kzoo and Denton (your correct...that event is a must go and I've gotten the okay from the boss (wife) to go every year, I just have to stay at the B&B we stayed at this year)! It's always nice to speak directly to the owners for questions at hand.

Also thanks all who have responded with help on this thread!

I have a Several files and have put an edge on my Zwickey Delta's so I might be able to get them going that way first.  I can get an almost consistent angle when using a file so "maybe" I'd be able to get some material off that way and finish them up with the KME.

I take it you really have to get material off and then finish with them?  I'd have bought the pre sharpened ones but fundage was low and after this week I'm really glad I didn't spend anymore than I did.  Money seems to be flowing like water this week and the tree out back is getting really bare!

Whip...congrats on the new addition!  Also keep the little one away from a spinning belt sander and a broadhead!

A tip of my camo hat, you cant find better customer service than what Ron provides.

Here is a sample of what a sharp 160 Grizzly can achieve, 55lb Habu, 530grain arrow, 13 yard shot on the ground, he did the hi-o-silver in front of me.

I don't know how long a buck is, but I'd say 4' maybe 5 feet long.

No one has ever lost a buck from to much penetration.

reddogge

I had a friend who shot one the longway but started at the back end.

Ron,
Thanks for the one on one lessons you gave me at Denton.  Great product.

That's an impressive photo and a great animal!

There was post on an elk shot with a grizzly where the bull was completely penetrated and the arrow was embedded in a tree behind the bull.  Love the photo of the bloody arrow sticking out of that Aspen tree!

It was a great photo and story...also showed the awesome penetration of a well-tuned arrow with a scary sharp broadhead!

Ron, how much you charging for pre-sharpened El Grandes?

Nice mulie!  My buddy did the exact reverse of this shot last year on a 330 bull.  Sure piled him up, I'll never let him live down the curious shot placement, the bull was spinning when he released and he got lucky.

Do you use right or left helical with the griz.
Seems I read it makes a diff with single beveled
heads.

Does Ron sell the griz and sharpen them also?

Sharpster

You have it right Sam,

RW fletch with RH Bevel and LW fletch w/LH bevel. And yes, We sell them pre-sharpened or we'll sharpen heads you send, whichever works best for you. Give me a call if you're interested.

There is no such a thing as sharp enough when it comes to broadheads.  Unless of course you are talking about KME sharp!

Thanks Ron...for a great sharpening system and everything you have taught me about living on the edge!  (There is a pun in there somewhere).
