i got a 8 week old jack pup what do i need to do to start it. any help would be great

If you do a search on here you will find a book that has been recomended for this.  I can't remember what it is, but some fellas said they found it very helpful.

Try deer search in NYS- I tracked till I got to old and worn out- used wire haired Dauschands. it was a good time.

Keep him with you as much as possible. He will learn the joy of doing things that please you, and anything you want him to do will come easier.

I had a blood trailing Basset that came about his talent by accident, and he spent his whole life trying to please me, and trying to drive me crazy, all at the same time.

The Jacks I`ve met, have more smarts than alot of people. Good luck with him!  

I dragged a hind quarter of car killed deer with the hair still on. When mine was a pup I would have him follow it. Next I would drag it out in the yard before letting him out and then let him out and lead him to the first blood, it is fun to watch. Also use the wind by placing some meat and then cross down wind of it with him. The more you put in time with him the better they will catch on.

I Have German Wirehairs; and they track; but they are a tall dog; and seldom is it that there is only one animal in the woods ( or fields).

It is logical to me that the closer the dogs nose to the ground -- the better the chance of keeping on the blood trail.

So short legged little buggers like dachshunds- make sense for the job.

After retrieving a deer I have gone back with my dog ( it was bird season ) and my dog followed the blood trail with no problem to the gut pile.

Our states government is considering allowing one dog to trail wounded game.... invest in the short legged dogs !
