I have often wondered where you draw the line. I guess that depends on the individual.

Just hunt ethically within state regulations.

The equiptment and what you decide to call it is up to you.

This next part is heresy to many, but....

Crossbows have been around since midieval times. Some would argue that is a heck of a lot of tradition in its own right.

Have fun, be safe and pass that bow and hunting on to a kid someday!

I completly agree with that forth line in the above post. Cross bows have been around since midieval times so they too should be considered traditional, Personally I wouldn't use one even in compeitive target shooting, but neither would I fault anyone who does. I may or may not be around when my three year oldgrandson "inherets" my archery equiment but to know what he calls it would be interesting to learn.

Cyrille,  the term wasn't used to describe our equipment until the comopound bow came along.  So if we are looking in the proper context, it means anything except compound bows.

That being said, it is the most corrupted term in the sport right now.  No two people can say what it means, so it is virtually useless in proper conversation.  They were using fiberglass in the very early 1950's...actually right after WWII.

If you look at a bow, and it has a string joining the two ends, and no other accouterments to help draw it...like wheels or cables...than you have a conventional bow.  It should be simple, but humans have a way to screw-up a junk yard, so I don't expect any resolution.  I call mine recurves and longbows

Don't spend any of God's valuable time pondering terms.  I can tell you that is not time well spent.  Let someone else worry about such silly things while you are shooting stumps or chasing game.

I agree completely with the third paragraph in the above post  remember the quote attributed to Alfred E. Newman of Mad Magazine--- "What, me worry?"

The arrow is more important than the bow. As long as your arrows are trad, you're trad.  Be sure to get the carbon arrows that look like wood.  I got the wooden ones that look like carbon and they shot backwards.

I shoot a recurve because I like to keep it simple! What George said purdy well sum's it up for me. I will admit that some of the compound bows these days sure do streatch the limits of anything that even remotely resembles a bow at all!! Just my 2 cents, Jason
