So I took my set up into the local archery shop which deals with some trad gear and asked for some help with bareshafting my arrows.  I wanted a set up that would maximize penetration for hunting (particularly hogs).  I shoot a Horne Combo 56@28 with Beman MFX classic 340 spine with 100 grain brass inserts and 250 grain points/BH.  Depending on the length we end up with they will be between 650-700g.  He thinks they are too heavy but I'd like some feedback from you guys.  I'm going to fletch a few and take them back in so we have a comparison group to work with.  Thanks for the feedback.

I think you are in good shape . I shoot 840 gr out of a 42@28 but 48@30 my draw length  recurve and love them. If they shoot good don't worry about it. Drew

Thanks Drew, it didn't seem unreasonable but he seemed to think so.  In fact, it seemed inline with much of what I've read by Ashby and OL.

SO they'll be between 11.6 and 12.5 grains per pound. Unless you can't hit your spots, they aren't too heavy to me. I shoot plenty of arrows that GPP on my faster bows and they fly fine out to 30yds(far as I can shoot at my house).

It is just what you want to shoot bud.  Some say they will penetrate better.  Some will say that your arrow may drop like a rock after 20 yards. A lot of people like to use the 10 grains per pound of draw weight theory. Best thing to do would be to try a couple and make your own judgement.  Good luck bud

Just a quick topic change, if I may; What's your drawlength?
Only reason I ask, is that I have the exact same bow drawing 63#@30" (57#@28) & I found that the 340 MFX were slightly too stiff, even at full length with the same insert & point weight. I ended up with a 400 spine, cut to 30-1/2" to get a perfect bareshaft. Comes in at 710gn

Weight-wise, I'd say you are right on the money  

Personally, I think the arrow weight is a bit over kill for North American game but, if you're happy with they way they fly, it's all good.  They'll do the job.

I am shooting MFX 340's out of my bow and they weigh just under 800 grains in all.  My draw is 31 inches though and it seems to shoot plenty fast.  They really hit hard. I think that you should go with them.  The penetration on game should be great.

If they are tuned correctly you should go with them. If the tuning is wrong the extra weight won't help penetration much.

Chris, I would agree that it would be overkill for Whitetail but I'm concerned more about penetration on hogs.  I do believe that a well placed shot on a hog doesn't require that much weight, but it's such a smaller kill zone and I find myself shying away from the shoulder area with lighter weight and I end up hitting too far back.  It may be more of a psychological aid but if it works...

That's quite a reasonable weight range in my opinion. Do you draw a measured 28" or more? For example, if you only draw 26" you are too heavy.

I shoot 51-54# bows with 725gr arrows,you sound like your ready to kill some pork!!!

I'll bet the bow loves 'em, nice and quiet, no vibtation, no need for silencers, and you can see 'em flying steady and true till they slam the target.

What's not to like? Go with it. Put a sharp razor on the front and shoot it totally thru a hog.

I would simply base it on how you like them and how they shoot for you.

I got a 52# and shoot 700 gr weighted carbons
