After 3 mos of waiting, we found out we're headed to NM to chase elk!  My father and I will be packing recurves, couple friends will be carrying wheelie bows, and another guy will be coming along just to run camp (looking forward to having that luxury).

Base camp is in Torrero.  We'll walk in 6-8 miles and the outfitter will pass us with our gear on pack horses.  We'll hunt for 5 days, and walk out... hopefully with a couple hundred pounds of elk!  

I'm used to pulling up mapquest photos of crop fields with scattered woodlots and hedge-rows.  It was a little different to see the terrain where we'll be.  I'm looking forward to the challenge.  Some serious stair climbing has been added to my workouts!

Be sure to spend plenty of time studying the area on Google Earth.  It is a great resource for out of state hunts and allows you to really learn the area before you ever leave home.

That should be a great hunt!  Are you doing a drop camp or guided?  If drop, is there any way to extend the trip as long as you are in there?  Five days will fly by before you know it!  Either way, you'll have a wonderful time in one of my favorite of all States!

Sounds like you will be based close to Beattys Cabin near Pecos Falls. That is a great area with a lot of elk. It is also high country that gets higher from there. This is a picture from just north of there about 6 more miles.

Whip, I was wrong on my dates; we'll be hunting 8 days.  Still probably considered a short stay, but it's the best we could do regarding time off of work.
We will be doing a drop camp.  The outfitter has done some scouting and the buddy of mine that is coordinating all this was raised near there and has hunted this area a few times.  I'm hoping that being supported by the knowledge of these two individuals, we recurve-shooting Kansas boys stand a fighthing chance at filling a tag.  I'm not going to be choosy about cow vs bull.  If it's in range, an arrow will fly!

I'm also going to be running a half marathon in Nov, so this gives me added incentive to train passed my usual 3-5 mile distances.

If you want to read a great book about the area you're hunting, look up "Beatty's Cabin" written by E.S. Barker.
It's not in print anymore but still available through Amazon or maybe your local library.

Elliot Barker spent a lot of time in those mountains and can tell a good story.

Man it is awesome for a guy to be able to come on here and say he is going hunting in an area and people just send all kinds of advise and pictures of the area.  Good work guys, I Love this site.
