You'll notice the "luckiest" elk hunters have worn out boots.

I spotted a good herd of rosies  on the way to my tree stand yesterday...There were several knob heads in the bunch...

I get REALLY excited when I see the new growth coming on...

Doing my first elk hunt this year. I somehow drew a big game combo tag in MT!! With no bonus points because I drew a deer combo last year!! Some think I should go to Vegas. Re-reading some of Dave's books while on the treadmill, eliptical, stairmaster etc

last year was my first year hunting elk.Me and a couple of friends, gps and topo maps and about 75lbs worth of gear each, yeah we brought to much stuff!!!!But we got into elk,had a nice 6x6 at 15 yards but could not get it done.Since we left I could not stop thinking about getting back to that mountain top and dreaming about those elk.Next to my kids being born I have never experienced anything as great as elk hunting. So like you guys I am counting the days!!!!

Marvin M.

A western hunt is out of the question for me, but I've been putting in for the Kentucky draw every year.  Deadline here is tomorrow for one of 400 tags (increased this year).  Odds should be better now.

I'm an optimist!  If I get drawn, I'll be worrying you guys to death to get advice on how to do this.

Got a MT combo, Can not wait!
The man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can't are both right!!!

I'ts not just the Elk, "It's the everything."

My dad went bowhunting for elk with me for the first time at age 60.  Went eveywhere I went and more.  We heard our first elk bugle together.  He has since passed on.  He always said it was the greatest trip and the most fun he ever had.

The last day of our trip we climbed to the highest point that overlooked our entire hunting area.  Approx 10,000 ft.  On the way up I thought it was getting to him.  I said "Dad it get's pretty bad from here on up".  His reply....." You can Make it!".

Elk hunting is special.............Rest Dad's soul.........

You never forget your first!  ...  Over 9,000 feet, snow-capped peaks all around.  Here's a paragraph from the book about this hunt and many, many more:

"By 9 a.m. I had hit all of the small springs in that draw and found myself setting against a large pine tree admiring the vast basin and impressive mountain peaks that lie before me.  This raw feeling welled up inside of me.  Here I was, feeling like the only man on the mountain with a bit of gear, two sticks and a string, seeking the king of the Rockies.  It was a bit early in the season, but this moment overtook me and I felt the need to rip off a nasty big-bull bugle.  So it did...and did again.  Suddenly I heard the distinct "thud, thud" of a heavy-hoofed animal just up the ridge.  I turned to see a rag horn bull coming toward me on a string.  A flash and he was 9 yards away.  I put the cedar shaft precisely in the crease behind his shoulder, mid-way from chest to spine.  The bull spooked, confused, and crashed 30 yards away.  I had been blessed with another clean, double-lung kill and hundreds of pounds of meat.  My only regret was that none of my brothers or Dad were there to share in that moment.  Especially when I began cleaning and packing out that huge animal!"

I hear ya LPM.  Hunting with family, especially you Dad, has no equal.
