Thought i'd post a few pics of my target repair project. I think I got the idea on here so it may be old news to some of you guys. I have let my targets go to sh******* the last few years and instead of trashing some of them, I decide to try and fix them up for one or two more seasons. I started out by pulling them out of the woods and bringing them up to the shop.


as you can see some are in criticle condition. thought about retireing the trukey but decided to try and get a few more shots out of him.
I got a roll of burlap, some spray adhesive, and the old standby, great stuff.

I sprayed the 3m on the targets and the burlap and covered the shot out areas. some targets required a full wrap around type dressing, as they were shot out complety through. I them cut a small hole in the burlap and fogged in the expanding foam.

Since these were mostly deep fills I let it dry and cook off over night. the next day alot of them looked like they had cancer.


I used a sawsaw to trim off the squeeze out. I'm sure just the blade or a hacksaw would be fine. I was getting tired of the whole thing by now though.

One side note. If they aren't too bad off, just fill the holes with gorilla glue. works great and probably a good way to keep em from getting too bad off.

I know some of you guys could do alot better job at painting these things to look more real, but I had alot of targets and not much time (UNC game was coming on later and I was out of beer).

Well I loaded them back in the mule and scattered them about in my back yard.





You don't see many Hyenas in eastern NC. Anyway thats how I did it. I'm sure with alittle more time they could be done to look alot nicer. I shoot this little course almost everyday and I'd rather be shooting than admireing my work . great practice and unlimited shot opportunities. Don

I have a total of 30 targets out in the woods for me to play with. I start the year with on a warm sunny day, taking my repair cart to each target.

I use the clear silcon that is used for keeping the cold from coming thru windows etc. I put a small hole in the end of the tube and then put the tip into each hole I see on the target. I put a little in each hole and wipe excess off.

I also have with me, spray paint in black for nose eye on deer and black for bear targets.I have white for deer for the belly area and also neck area. I have a light brown I found at a dollar store for the deer body. I purchased a full two doz cans at a buck each.

It is a all day job, but when I am done I am good as gold and all targets are good for another year.

If the target is real shot up I also use the old piece of bulap target to tack over the hole in the side of the target, then just shoot the expanding foam into the center of the hole. I let it dry, then sand down and paint....

I have deer target that are 2D Spence brand that are now in use for 14 years in the field.

hey batman they look great. very innovative, and alot cheaper than going out and buying a new 3d target. i dont know what a new one costs but i remember looking at prices yrs ago, and a new 3d buck with antlers cost $80.gotta be much more than that now. anyhow awesome job and great pics

I like the burlap idea.

I have targets I have been shooting for 20 years. A little great stuff and paint and they are ready for another year. The key is to collect a bunch of targets so you spread your shooting out. I buy the shot up ones that are auctioned off after a big tournament on Sunday evening.

Here is my toughest fix so far.I paid the princely sum of $5 for it.

Looks good Batman, I guess you could do the same thing to the square broadhead targets.

Couple questions whats the expanding foam supposed to be used for? Havnt heard of it before. Where could I get some of that? Any brand names that you reccomend?

Observation here..... when I run across these "great-stuff" fixed targets on ranges, the foam almost always seems real weak compared to the target, resulting in pass-thru shots.  Anybody else experiencing this?  I am shooting 60# and carbon CH Heritage arrows......

I am not sure they have had the spray foam "confined" as usually they have the old "ugly tumor" appearance.

Wondering if that might make a difference?

Regarding the weakness of the "great stuff" and passthroughs. I shoot heavy bows usually 65# and up. I wad up several bread bags and and stuff them into the holes and then do the foam. The twisted plastic inside the foam adds frictionb to impede penetration.

Yeah I notice the foam is weaker. I'll have to try the bread bag trick next time. I get my foam from lowes. burlap from agrisupply. Don

Batman,where did you find that big roll of burlap?I need to get one for my ladder stands to make blinds around them.Need to patch a few targets too.Don't ever use the low expansion window foam it sucks...

Lowes carries that foam I believe. WEAR GLOVES! If you get it on you it has to pretty much wear off. Don't ask me how I know that.  :rolleyes:
