Just wandering if anybody else enjoys these while out spring scouting their hunting grounds and/or stump shooting.

my father is originally from WV. and there has been times when i've set in the woods waiting for him wondering "where in the h_ll is he".then he'd show up with a pocket full of mushrooms..those and ramps..but up here in vermont they call them leeks.

For me deep fryed morels is the only way to go.

Here in South-Central Illinois, the black and grey mushrooms are just starting in our first spring turkey season. Weather permitting that is!! My wife just found 10 black sponge yesterday. I'll be lookin' Monday morning after I get out of the blind!!! I like em' fried up in the morning for breakfast with soft eggs and fresh jowl bacon. MMMMMMM... Makin' me hungry!!

Boys are finding them in Indiana, Ill, Mo and southern Kansas.. We are at least 3 weeks out but waiting..
I like to watch the lilacs, When they start to bud, you are close. When they start to open, the shrooms are poking up.. When they start to shed their blossoms, the shrooms are getting dried out etc..
Works for me most of the time, but I have found them on April 1 and seen them as late as June

The third week of April here in Pa. is getting into Morrell time.  I let the ramps in the ground....you can smell them for miles..eeeech!

What type of area do you find them in? I never seem to see any, and I am out  in the woods often.

What is/are your favorite ways to prepare them??

I had some this morning with eggs . I picked last year. Yes we enjoy hunting them but in Idaho we are looking at late May early June. If you are able to pick a hole bunch with some care they freeze well and will last the season into the next. We find them when looking for spring bear.

I didn't know they grew in the snow, here I wasn't even looking.

Hunting morels is one of my favorite pastimes the last week of April to the middle of May.  One of our traditions is to collect them the day before Mothers Day and bring a batch for her. My favorite way of preparation is on a grill over an open fire after dipping in a mixture of soy sauce and melted butter. Don't grill'm too long.

Got my eye out here in the middle of Il., just east of St.Louie. None yet. Cold comin in tomorrow. Might put em off for a week.

I heard someone call them "Molly Moochers". never heard them called that before.

Not looking yet, usually towards the end of April and 1st of May.

Don't start to see them around here until late April-early May.I'll be looking for them while turkey hunting and stumping.One thing I've learned is pick 'em when you find 'em...if you think "I'll give them a couple more days to grow" they might be gone when you come back,the critters like them too.
I like to cook them up in a skillet with eggs or sautee them and put them over a steak just off the grill...yummy.
