well, not me by myself.  i hired a couple fellows to plant 2100 pine trees and Griffin and me planted two sawtooth oaks.  here are a few pics of how i spent my day.  these oaks are 12' tall and not something you just drop in the ground.  also, here is a point i knocked out of some of eddie's phosphate stuff while i waited on everyone to get there this morning.

I love planting trees! I've probably put in 3000+ pines in the last 4 years! Sure is fun!

wahoo

nice . In my neck of the woods people take pride in taking them down. Go figure

geno

that is cool. Must be nice to have that much flat ground with actual dirt and not rock

I have some seedlings that should be here anytime. Never can have too many trees.

wahoo, pines are the cash crop in my neck of the woods.  i had 28,000 pines planted last feb and had a little extra room to add a few more this year.

jj, why pines? i'm planning on these little fellows growing into my retirement.  if timber prices stay steady, my $4000 total investment should turn into approx. $175,000 - 200,000 in 20-25 years.  plus i get to deer in them the entire time.  when they get 3' high, deer will be thick as flys in them, just no downside as i can see.  of course, the sawtooths will draw deer when dropping like moths to a flame.

Yeah, what he said!  And I don't mind you cutting 'em down for your retirement.  We will grow some more.

Good luck with it all!

I had 30 acres cut last year, built a pond of several acres on the site, and planted (by contract) over 12,000 loblolly pines on the remaining 20 acres. Pine plantations can be very productive for wildlife if managed properly, and pay off in the future. I won't live long enough to profit from mine, but my kids will. I didn't kill off the hardwood sprouts like the hard-core forestry people recommend, because I want some hardwoods in the mix. It will reduce the pine yield, but that's OK. I'm not in it just for the money.

I planted 6 sawtooth oak seedlings last weekend, too.

I got lucky. My neighbor just planted 1,500 sawtooth oaks (right alongside the property line) in a pasture he wants to convert to woodland. My place is thick bottom land - perfect bedding area. Just wait, in a few years, things ought to really get good. I hope I live long enough to see those trees start putting out acorns.

sam, they'll start dropping in 8-10 years.

If you want timber suitable for cutting lumber when mature, you don't want sawtooth. It's a small tree when mature. When I was in forestry/wildlife school in the '70's, sawtooth was recommended to plant in pine plantations because of its small size, early maturity, and abundant acorns.

wow, that is a good investment.
