I have and excelsior bale in the backyard we shoot at (me, my hunting buddies, our girlfriends, my brother, their brothers, the neighbor kids, you get the picture. it gets used a lot). I found a bowed piece of plywood I use for a roof. I put 4 eye-bolts in the wood base of the stand, and 4 in the corners of the plwywood and use 4 bungies to hold it down.

The target had a built on roof, but after replacing it 5 or 6 times after the wind blew it off and busted it, i went with the plywood and bungies.

In a moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.

I won't post a link here, becuase they are not a sponser, but if you do a google search on bulldog targets, I have the bulldog FP and I really like it.   It is for field points only, but that was fine with me. 24" x 24" face on that one, lifetime warranty and free shipping.
Ask me about CTO.

I use an old 100# feed bag and stuff it with bailing twine. I have a bag in the barn that we put the string from the hay bales in. When it is full, sew it shut and instant target. We only have horses in the summer so I have a short "growing season" for targets. If you go to any stable or livestock farm you can probably make a deal to do the same thing. Stuffed well it really stops field point well though anything else, broadheads, judo's hex blunts etc get tangled in the twine.

What do you all use for broadheads.

blob targets!!! cant beat them.  they last forever.  we have one huge round one and i have a smaller square one.  my small one is a lot heavier and solid than the round one.  the round one is softer and arrow removal is truly 2 finger.  we have some 3-d targets and a glen dell full rut.  the full rut was a big dissapointment.

I made a target from stacked cardboard.   It is compressed by two thread rods and work great.

Go to a grocery store where they bale cardboard, or your landfill may bale also.   The bales are about 4' square.  Heavy.  Take off your tail gate and load directly onto the bed of your truck.   At home set it on a pallet or tractor tire with a couple of planks spanning it.  The bale will last literally years (mine are at least 10 years old).  Don't worry about the wire that binds them.  It lasts that long also.   You can put targets on all four sides.  Or, you can enclose two sides, put on a metal roof and hang canvas over the open ends for protection of the target faces in bad weather. These butts are just about indestructible covered or not. Look for a business that produces tight bales. I have 4 bales and use seven sides.  Variety of target opportunity.  Great for mini competitions with family and friends.
no clue how to do this

I stuff my used dog food bags (40 or 50 lb bags) with old plastic or remains of other targets. They last 6 months or so, but they are free. I wrap the seams with duct tape to keep them closed. When they are toast, the remains get stuffed into a new dog food bag.
