I have dipping Carbons for some time and have great results. Now a friend of mine has given me a set of CE 150's to dip for him and they are reacting every time I try and dip them???????? Large bubbles and looks kind of stringy? I just dipped one of my gold tips and it was perfect. I have wiped down the CE's with Acetone steel   wool and finally mineral spirits. What the heck is going on?

Strange!! For paint to bubble it has to have a reaction to the surface, siloicone or wax or a oily type substance will cause this. Sounds like you have tried everything I would try, good luck.  Might have to use wraps instead.

I prefer dipping peanut butter bread in coffee 8^).

very light wipe with OOOO steel wool and then clean with MEK. NO MINERAL SPIRITS. It leaves a residue. Make sure all air bubbles from stirring(never shake to mix) have dissipated (wait 30 mins). Pop any with a stick before dipping.

I have the same problems with the Heritage shafts.
I lighty sand the area and clean with acetone or MEK. I still get Bubbles and such. I never had a problem with any other shaft MFG. I have Been dipping carbons since they came out. You might have to dip them in clear first......

CE's have something on them that "reacts".  When putting wraps on that will adhere to anything the CE shafts have to be cleaned and "roughed" up.  I don't like 'em and I try and steer my customers from them when they want one of my custom shafts.  Stuff (cap dips and wraps) just don't want to stick to the shaft.  This is the only shaft I have ever had  a return on.

Thanks for all the info. I ended up sanding them some with a little improvement. Jake Your right about them being the only shaft that act this way. I have been dipping many other brands over the years and have not had these problems. These are actually for a guy i shoot with. I told him I would make him some nice arrows then every thing went to hell. Mark how are you? been awhile. I'm off on a new adventure just ordered a new riser from Morrison after buying some limbs from Sisco. Backwards I know but Steelhead had a lot to do with the bow choice.

If you use MEK wear rubber gloves and do it in a well ventilated area...  We know it as Methyl Ethyl Death in the fire service.

ya there is something on the Heritage finish that causes that, even when putting on wraps

only way i have found to get it every time is to sand it down well and wipe dust clean i don't used acetone after sanding and have no problems after that.

I clean CE shafts with acetone then mask and spray the cap. Then crest and spray clearcoat. Never had a problem.

Try cleaning the shafts with an abrasive cleaner like Comet. Usually works very well. Dry with paper towels and don't touch the shaft you are trying to dip.

has anyone tried cleaning them in the bohning ssr shaft cleaner before dipping?

Ive been using onestringers wraps on all my CX Heritages, and never had a problem after prepping with denatured alcohol.

Is it the Buff Tuff finish causing problems?

Same a Zmonster, never had a problem with onestringers wraps and al I do is wash them with dish soap and warm water. I also would never steer anyone away from the heritage shafts, they are some of the very best! Shawn

I had a similar problem and followed some of the mentioned corrective steps.  After doing all of this and restripping and so forth, I ended up not compltely stripping the dipped arrow that reacted poorly.  I lightly took steel wool to it and left the good paint.  I then redipped it and the second coats did not react negatively.  

I had the same results on the same set of shafts (Easton Epics) when I tried to spray them with Krylon as another alternative and ended up doing the same process...only it did not takes as long between the coats.

I have never had a problem.  I wipe down the shaft with de-natured alcohol, I do not sand or use steel wool.  I dip in bohning paints.
