I have a friend who is a Michigan Conservation Officer. He runs their Conservation Officers Association. Each year they have a fund raising banquet for injured officers and other programs they have. This is something they do on their own seperate from their employer, and is not open to the public. In talking with my friend it seems there is an interest among the Officers in traditional archery. Since they take donations for this banquet, I came up with the idea of donating a bow and arrows to be auctioned off. I spoke with J.D. Lund of Whisperstik Bows and he said he would be happy to build them a bow. I said I would build the arrows. Tommorrow I will deliver the bow and arrows to my friend. Thank you to J.D. Lund, the bow is beautiful!

Along with the bow and arrows I am sending the following letter-

To the Conservation Officers of Michigan.

The Bow and Arrows you see are a small symbol of our appreciation for your undying dedication to the protection of our natural resources.

This recurve bow was built by J.D. Lund of Whisperstik Bows in Coral, Michigan. He also hand crafted the string. Whisperstiks have a reputation of being fast and quiet. At 48 lbs it is sufficient to hunt deer or other game here in Michigan. The riser is walnut with a tulipwood flair and the limb veneers are also tulipwood.  The limb tips are Elk antler. You will notice it has fur silencers on the string. The fur is from a Mink that was trapped here in Michigan. The camoflage bow sock was made by Amy Kurkowski of Sidney, Michigan.

These Arrows were built specifically for this bow and the Michigan Conservation Officers Association by John Kurkowski of Sidney, MI. They are made of Cedar and were spined to match this bow weight. You will notice they are stained to match the bow and given a special crest. The crests are important to traditional archers and usually have a meening. This crest is no different, the colors chosen are to reflect the "Green and Grey" of a Michigan Conservation Officer. The same reason for the green and grey feathers.

To whoever gets these- Please use them! Yes they are pretty, but they were meant to be used and not just admired.

Wonderful work by both of you, and what a great and generous donation.  Acts like that go a long way to making traditional hunters look good.  You make us all proud!      

You gave me a big smile, thinking of the gift and the officers, and trad bowhunting. I regard these folks as my heroes, as they protect the land and wildlife that I love so deeply.

Aside from staying out of trouble, and offering coffee, I am hard pressed to find a way to say Thank You for all that they do.
