does anyone know where to get good quality canvas game bags.  I have been using the cheesecloth bags for a few years and am just not happy.  They always seem to tear and dont keep all the flies and bugs out.

Any suggestions?

check out the army navy stores for canvas "laundry bags".

I think mine came from Cabelas.

Those heavy duty game bags are common in Alaska.  I don't know the brand names but I used them routinely for moose when I lived there.  After use, they can be washed and used again the next year.  I don't know if there are web sites but Big Rays, The Prospector, and Sports Authority are in Fairbanks and always had them.

I use the outfitter grade extra strong ones made made by The Allen Company.I usually pick mine up in COLORADO .

I had the wife make a bunch from cotton/poly cloth and put a draw string in them.  Jason and I each carry 3 in the bottom of our packs when elk hunting and can bone and bag a whole elk before we head to the truck.  Now with our Bison Gear packs, we can haul a load our too.

They usually last for a couple of animals but weigh a heck of a lot less then the canvas ones.

I have a set of those too and they have never left camp.

Usually use em for dirty clothes.  LOL

I've been to Alaska 8 times and have always used extra large pillow cases. For moose I've used military surplus mattress covers. Goodwill or Salvation Army are a good source for the pillow cases.

King size pillow cases.

I use the king size pillow cases too.

If you're going to pack them on your back, the canvas are too bulky and heavy.  Go the pillowcase method.  Cheaper if you have someone who can sew, use old sheets too.

For horse/boat use the canvas are great since they take abuse very well.

I use old army bags comes with a strap.

Pillow case is a great idea.  I forgot to mention that I am looking for something big enough to wrap an whole deer.  I may have to see if I can get my wife to make one for me.  

In that case what sort of dimensions are necessary to wrap a whole deer?????

I get the pillow cases at Goodwill also, but if you need something bigger, you could probably just pick up some sheets there and have them sewed on two sides. I personally prefer 100% cotton, it breaths way better than any of the synthetics.

Take a Queen size sheet and have her fold it in half and sew the long side and one of the short sides.  You can patch small holes in an old sheet w/shoe goo and a bit of material. I've got 2 of them and they are great in warm weather.  

Don't use the smaller sized sheets since then you can have trouble pulling the material away from the meat, which helps dry it out.
