I just have a question for those who hunt with selfbows, How far do you limit yourself to shooting at game? Thanks!

Pat B

The same as with a glass bow, about 20 yards. I prefer 12 to 15 yards though for any bow.   Pat

Ive pretty much kept it the same distance as Ive shot all my deer at with a bow (compound or otherwise) 20 yards or under.
Hunt fair, hunt hard, no regrets.

20 would be my normal max, but it really depends on the circumstances,,, from a stand, from the ground, up hill, down hill clear or obstructed shot, etc.

25 tops for me since the cast is less than a glass backed bow of the same draw and the drop can be hard to judge past that distance.

I will play on the 3-D course out to 40 yds with my 44# self bow, but the grouping is just not consistant enough to be confident to hunt past 20-25 yds.

Normally 20 yards, but sometimes I get a "feeling" and shoot out to 45.

I'm no self-bow expert, but I shot one of Loyd Lippert's bows when we went out squirrel hunting and stumping, and I would say a well made bow like that one still shoots better than I do!!!

Loyd's short, semi-static osage bow cast an arrow (visually at least) right up there with my modern laminated bow.

The shooter knows his effective range, not the bow...

DEATHMASTER

How far do YOU practice to and are efficent?
50 yrds is do able if a person is really good and practiced out to there.
Most animals are taken under 20 yards and many inside 15.
All well made bows will shoot better than most people out there.
Tune the set up and practice but attempt to get close. If you can hit a tennis ball 5 out of 5 at 50 yards a 20 yard shot is a chip shot.

Howard Hill shot a selfbow and took animals out past 100 yards. Like Curtis said, it's the shooter not the bow. The bow is just another tool and in the right hands can be as effective as any bow no matter what the bow is made of. Some English War Bows are selfbows and can shoot over 300 yards with some accuracy.
