Ok, I am not one to judge anyone on thier own choice of hunting equipment, but I have heard this comment for the fourth time in two weeks, and its getting under my skin!  Last night I was watching a T.V. Show and the guy was talking about how hard it would be to head out and hunt elk with his "stick and string".  Well his so called stick and string was a tricked out bowtech with all the bells and whistles you could imagine.  And it was SO HARD to take the 50 yard shot on a bull that was quartering HARD towards him (it was almost looking at him).  

I know that I shouldn't let it get to me, but every time he said "stick and string" it made me cringe inside.  I was just wondering what everyone else thought about this?

i never cared for the term stick and string since todays fiberglas,foam,carbon etc LB and RC are far from a stick. never cared for the term "homemade" arrows either when the components are bought and assembled at home. that said, a compound is certainly not a "stick and string" some folks have a false sense of security or ability when using a modern bow,me included. i wouldnt take a 50yd shot at anything with any bow though.

That's why I don't watch those programs.  The shooter, not hunter, wouldn't know a stick and string if he saw one.  He's shooting a mechanical arrow launching device closely related to a crossgun.

im with orin too !!!! this aint right at all id love to show them guys what a real stock and string is cuz thats all i use  and i make my own  and in my book a stick and string is nothing but a self bow or english long bow    they aint got a clue relley get s under my skin too  brock

We all know it should be a self bow term!

I have way to much respect for self bows to call my lam bows sticks. My "stick" would probably snap at the thought of it! LOL        

I agree with your take on the terminology. Although even with wheels, you still have to get close...not that 50 yds is close of course...most reasonable wheelie hunters do get close. I have shot both for a very long time and now only the "stick and string" longbow. I used to get close and that is the hunt. I chose to go back only to traditional for my personal fullfilment and I just love every aspect of how hard shooting game with traditional equipment is. I must say it is getting easier and I am getting much better at it, might be time for a self made self bow soon...I would cringe at those comments as well.

I agree that we should have a standard terminology.  When you break it down to:

Self bow - all wood
Self bow - natural backing
longbow - all wood
longbow - laminate
recurve - laminate
takedown - laminate

Those kind of terms explain a lot more than sick and string.

I defend the right for those to shoot what ever they want, but I also believe that many have abouse the term tradtional and even primitive.

I specialize in 'primitive' bows and arrows, but in reality that should be called 'semi-primitive' or 'modern replicas' because I do use a fair amount of modern tools to speed up the process.  I could and have used all true primtive tools, but if I did that for sale items it would take more than 5 times as long and cost way more.  Well beyond whst the market would bear.

I wish archery folks would not fight about it - rather just accept a standard set of terms.  Along with that I wish that state F&G would set aside areas for truly traditional or primitive archers, but I don't believe that is going to happen because of the tremendous commercial lobby pressure of the training wheel companies.

Same goes for Traditional Muzzleloading, which is my second love. (in shooting that is)

I'd love to have a real stick and string.  I'm gonna make or buy me a nice self bow one day.
