So here's the story, I am enamored with old Bear bows.  That being said I my Northern Mist Baraga for a '68 K-Mag.  Don't get me wrong I love the K-Mag, but I miss the lines and shooting of a longbow.  I am thinking of another Northern Mist, a Mahaska, or a Great Northern.  Around 55-60#'s.  Anybody got opinions on the last two or on any of the Northern Mist bows other than the Baraga.  I won't be purchasing anytime soon, but I am saving my pennies.  Thanks for all the help folks.

i can tell ya i am VERY impressed with the Mahaska. a very smooth, forgiving shooter and the price for a custom one to your specs is about the best you will find! i also had the chance to shoot a Great Northern which was impressive but did not fit me as well as the Mahaska, the Great Northern would also be a lot more money to order. if ya keep your eye on the classfieds i'm sure you will find a GREAT deal on used Mahaska's, they seem to go at a low price. might pick up another one myself if the price is right.

Hard to beat a Northern Mist or Mohawk for the money! The NM Superior is an excellent shooter, and if you like Hill style bows the Shelton is about as nice shooting as you will find!

Ken, my brother from another mother, I would love nothing more than to shoot your Mahaska.  However, the idea of you shipping your bow to me and then me shipping it back scares me.  I would hate for something to happen to your bow in transit bro.  That is, unless we could talk Uncle Sam into letting Killdeer personally drive it down to SC to deliver and then bring it back up to NY to you.  At least we'd then know it would be well taken care of.  Hopefully we will share a campfire sometime in the future and then you will not be able to keep your bow away from me, hehehe.  I do appreciate the offer brother and I would love to shoot it, but as I said, I would hate for anything to happen in transit.

I have a 55# Mahaska and I agree with Ken. They are great bows. I put an eight strand D97 string with 16 strand loops and yarn serving on the loops on my Mahaska and it is like a whole new bow! It was a bit shocky before, but now it is dead in the hand and still has all the desirable qualities of a Mahaska. I had it for sale in the classifieds, but after changing the string, I don't think I'll part with it.

Northern Mist makes a string follow Hill style bow (not sure of the model name) that is a tack driver. If (when) I buy another new bow, that's the one for me.

Great Northern. Jerry makes a quality product and is an awesome guy to boot.

WESTBROOK

Shaun, that would be the Shelton. They are nice!

30coupe,

Putting a FF type string on a Mahaska bow voids the warranty.  If you are already past the warranty period, no harm, no foul.

I am way past that! After trying this, I really think Kent needs to rethink the B50 thing. I used to think it made no difference, but wow! I have to change my tune now. No pun intended.
