They were all made by John Mc Collough until just a few years ago 01-02???  Not sure when Mr. Coffee started making the Shrews for Ron.  

John still makes beautiful bows under his line of Griffin so you can see why they look, shoot and feel so close. Have had several of both and you can not find a better Hi-bred no matter which you choose.  

In my case I chose the Griffins by John and now have 3 of them.

The Shrew came first and is Ron LaClair's design, so I reckon it's safe to say he designed the Griffin, essentially a Shrew copy, as well.  See "The story behind the Shrew" on Ron's website. At one time John McCullough built Shrews  and Griffins, the Shrews were 60" or shorter, Griffins were 60" or longer. I believe Griffins can now be had in the shorter lengths as well. I've owned three Shrews and two Griffins and they're all very good bows.

The Super Shrews were built while McCullough was building for Ron. The Classic Hunter LB, Scout and Lil' Favorite Recurves are Ron/Gregg inventions.

So, did McCullough most likely build my 54" Shrew recurve, which was built in the mid to late '90s?

Doug , could be, John started building them in'95. Gary Holmes before him.

The "Shrew Concept" ....short, light, quick, limb design...was Ron's baby ( I know, I know, there were short and light bows before Ron was born).

John built bows for Ron for quite awhile, and builds an excellent bow to this day. I have a McCullough Shrew and it is awesome. Guys love thier Griffins, for good reason.

My observation (believe it or not, Ron and I have never discussed this) is that Gregg and Ron work more closely together than Ron and John did. That is not meant as a negative comment at all.

But together, Ron and Gregg have built up some of the greatest "Shrew accomplishments"....the Li'l Favorite, the Classic, etc. These are GREAT days for Shrew buyers.

So is a griffin exactly the same design as the shrew?

No, they aren't.

The Griffin and the Shrew are not identical. When I lay my Griffin against my buddies Shrew at first glance they look very similar, but the limbs on a Griffin are narrower and thicker through the core.  Handles are slightly different.  

I ordered my Griffin because I personally prefer a longer bow and wanted one at 64".  The Shrew is one of the finest shooting short longbows out there, and if you are looking for a short great shooting bow it is sure one to look at.
